The mountain, 7495 m, stands in the Academy of Sciences range and belongs to the Snow Leopard programme. In altitude and technical content it is one of the principal expedition routes of the former USSR.

The classic route, Russian grade 5A, starts at the Moskvin Base Camp, runs along the Walter glacier and leads onto the Borodkin spur. The modern line of entry onto the Pamir Firn Plateau differs from the original variant where the old way became unsafe. From there the route continues through the area of Dushanbe Peak, high snow and ice slopes and the open summit ridge.

The defining feature is scale. A chain of high camps is built between Base Camp and the summit, and the descent usually takes more than one day. A participant carries personal equipment and the agreed share of the group load, pitches tents, makes water and food, and stays effective after several nights above 6000 m.

Acclimatisation begins before the main rotation and continues on the Moskvin glacier. A check excursion to a lower summit or to a high camp makes it possible to assess tolerance of altitude, technique and speed of recovery. After a rest at Base Camp the group starts the main rotation through camps at roughly 5100, 5800, 6100 and 6900 m.

Participants are admitted with a record above 6000 m and confident use of crampons, ice axe, ascender and descender. Good aerobic endurance, the ability to work with a heavy rucksack and experience of nights in high-altitude tents are all needed. Lenin Peak may be a stage of the preparation, but it is not an automatic admission.

The objective dangers include crevasses, icefall terrain, snow and ice slopes, avalanche and ice conditions, exposed sections of ridge, strong wind and rapidly deteriorating weather. To those are added altitude illness, dehydration, frostbite and mistakes made under fatigue. A guide’s decision to turn around is binding.

Preparation takes months: cyclical endurance, strength work, long days out with a rucksack, technical training and previous exposure to altitude.

Communism Peak climbing programme, 27 days

The programme runs for 27 days and keeps a reserve for the weather, for recovery and for the helicopter logistics. The camp altitudes and the distribution of individual overnight stops may be adjusted by the guide according to the actual state of the route, without shortening the acclimatisation that is required.

Day 1. Arrival in Dushanbe.

Meeting at the airport, transfer and check-in. The guide checks documents, insurance and technical equipment. Every critical replacement must be made before the departure for the mountains. Night in Dushanbe.

Day 2. Start of the preliminary acclimatisation.

The group moves to an agreed area not far from Dushanbe where training excursions can be made before the helicopter flight. The purpose of this stage is to recover from the flight and to begin adapting without an abrupt jump to the altitude of Base Camp. Night at the confirmed accommodation.

Day 3. Acclimatisation excursion.

A long excursion at an easy pace is used to check fitness, footwear and work with a rucksack. On return, participants review how they feel and adjust their personal kit. Night at the same place.

Day 4. Technical training.

The group goes over movement in crampons, self-belay, climbing fixed ropes and descending. The task of the day is to eliminate technical mistakes before the glacier part of the expedition. Night at the same place.

Day 5. Acclimatisation continues.

A further excursion increases the duration of the load while keeping the intensity moderate. The guide assesses each participant’s pace and their ability to recover by the following morning. Night at the same place.

Day 6. Recovery and baggage preparation.

Participants rest, sort their equipment and distribute the loads for the helicopter and the high camps. Anything not needed in the mountains is separated out in advance. Where the night is spent depends on the confirmed logistics.

Day 7. Helicopter to the Moskvin Base Camp, about 4360 m.

In suitable weather the group flies in to Base Camp. After the rapid gain in altitude, participants settle in, rest and watch how they are feeling. Night at Base Camp.

Day 8. Acclimatisation at Base Camp.

A short excursion and an introduction to the infrastructure start the adaptation. The guide explains the radio procedure, movement on the glacier and what to do if the weather deteriorates. Night at Base Camp.

Day 9. Training excursion on the Moskvin glacier.

The group practises roped movement and navigation among the crevasses. The load is chosen so as to raise the altitude reached without excessive fatigue. Night at Base Camp.

Day 10. Glacier acclimatisation continues.

The excursion becomes longer and allows technique, pace and drinking regime to be checked. On return the equipment is dried and prepared for the check rotation. Night at Base Camp.

Day 11. Preparation for the check ascent.

The guide assesses the state of the group and the forecast and distributes bivouac equipment. The day may include a short excursion or recovery, depending on the acclimatisation. Night at Base Camp.

Day 12. Climb to the check high camp, about 4800 m.

The group sets out for an acclimatisation summit or an agreed training route and establishes a camp. A night above Base Camp gives the body an extra stimulus before the main rotation. Night in tents.

Day 13. Check ascent and return to Base Camp.

Participants complete the acclimatisation excursion and then descend for full recovery. The guide assesses technique and readiness for the main route. Night at Base Camp.

Day 14. Rest day.

Sleep, food, hydration and drying equipment matter more than any additional load. Participants report every symptom and every equipment problem to the guide. Night at Base Camp.

Day 15. Preparation for the main rotation.

The group checks the forecast, packs food, fuel and personal belongings and distributes tents and ropes. The guide confirms the tactics and the turnaround criteria. Night at Base Camp.

Day 16. Along the Walter glacier to Camp 1, about 5100 m.

The main rotation begins. The group crosses moraine and glacier terrain, watching for crevasses and controlling the pace. Night in tents.

Day 17. Climb to Camp 2, about 5800 m.

The route leads onto steeper snow and ice terrain. Participants work roped and on the prepared sections, then pitch camp and recover. Night in tents.

Day 18. Onto the Pamir Firn Plateau, camp at about 6100 m.

The group passes the key section of the Borodkin spur and comes out onto the great plateau. After a long day, food, water and watching for symptoms of altitude matter particularly. Night in tents.

Day 19. Climb to the high camp at about 6900 m.

The route continues through the area of Dushanbe Peak and up a steep snow and ice slope. This is one of the hardest stages, so the pace and the decision to continue are set by the guide. Night in tents.

Day 20. Ascent of Communism Peak, 7495 m.

An early start leads along the open summit ridge. The group stays on the summit only in safe conditions and then returns to the camp at about 6900 m. Reaching the summit is not guaranteed. Night in tents.

Day 21. Descent to the Pamir Firn Plateau, about 6100 m.

After summit day the group keeps working carefully: fatigue increases the risk of a mistake. Participants strike the agreed part of the camp and carry the loads down. Night in tents.

Day 22. Descent to the camp at about 5100 m.

The group leaves the plateau and descends the technical sections. Speed must not reduce the quality of the protection. Night in tents.

Day 23. Return to Base Camp.

The final stage of the main rotation follows the Walter glacier. At Base Camp participants get hot food, dry their equipment and recover. Night at Base Camp.

Day 24. Reserve day.

The reserve is used in the event of a delay caused by the weather, by a slow pace or by an extra night on the descent. If the rotation has been completed as planned, the day is given to recovery and to preparing for the flight. Night at Base Camp.

Day 25. Helicopter out of Base Camp and return to Dushanbe.

The flight is made only in suitable weather and where it is operationally possible. After the road transfer the group checks in at Dushanbe. Night in a hotel.

Day 26. Reserve and recovery in Dushanbe.

The day covers a possible helicopter delay and allows rest after the expedition. Anything in the city is possible only if there is actually time for it and is not a compulsory part of the climb. Night in Dushanbe.

Day 27. End of the programme.

The transfer to the airport is made at the agreed time. Participants arrange their own international departure, allowing the necessary margin after the helicopter part of the expedition.

What the Communism Peak expedition price includes

Meeting at Dushanbe airport and the group transfers set out in the confirmed programme

The road journey Dushanbe – Jirgatal – Dushanbe

Accommodation in Dushanbe and Jirgatal as set out in the programme

The helicopter flight from Jirgatal to the Moskvin Base Camp and back

Accommodation and meals at the Moskvin Base Camp

Food for the high-altitude section of the expedition

A professional mountain guide on the route

Registration of the group with the rescue service

The border-zone permit and the compulsory local fees

Use of the fixed ropes prepared on the route

Tents and the agreed group equipment for the high camps

Radio communication for coordinating the group on the route

A hot shower and a place to charge electronics at Base Camp

Route advice and first aid within the capabilities of the expedition team

What the Communism Peak expedition price does not include

International flights to Dushanbe and back

The Tajikistan visa, where a participant requires one

Meals in Dushanbe and Jirgatal that are not specified in the confirmed programme

Single occupancy, early check-in and late check-out

Medical insurance for high-altitude mountaineering, search and rescue and helicopter evacuation

Personal climbing equipment and its hire

High-altitude porter services

Gas cylinders for the high camps

Excess baggage on the helicopter and on flights

Personal expenses, additional drinks and services

Costs arising from ending the expedition early, from a change of route or from an individual evacuation

Tips for the guides and the support team

Equipment requirements

Personal and group equipment requirements are confirmed in the individual proposal and checked with the mountain guide before the expedition.

Climbing Communism Peak, now named Ismoil Somoni Peak, 7495 m — one of the most serious high-altitude expeditions in the Pamir. The classic 5A route runs from the Walter glacier over the Borodkin spur, across the Pamir Firn Plateau and past Dushanbe Peak.

The programme is intended for experienced mountaineers with confirmed ascents above 6000 m and confident technique on snow, ice and mixed ground.
