A failed attempt on Ojos del Salado rarely comes down to a single cause. Usually altitude, fatigue, wind, the state of the road, mistakes with clothing, too fast a pace or a late decision to turn back all combine. Working through the factors is more useful than looking for someone to blame.
The main reasons people turn back
1. Gaining height too quickly
A vehicle can move you between camps quickly, but the body does not adapt at the speed of a car. Cutting nights or skipping an outing may show up as early as Atacama or Tejos, by which point a safe descent is harder.
2. Concealed symptoms
Afraid of losing a chance at the summit, people fail to mention a headache, nausea or unusual weakness. The team gets the information too late. Honest daily monitoring increases safety and is not a sign of weakness.
3. Not enough endurance
Technically straightforward terrain breeds false confidence. The summit day is still long, and movement at altitude is still slow. If you have not trained for several days in a row, accumulated fatigue shows up before the final section.
4. Cold and wind
Frozen hands make it hard to fasten a harness and to eat, cold feet change the way you walk, and constant wind speeds up fatigue. The problem is not only the lack of a warm layer but also putting it on too late.
5. Unsuitable equipment
- Crampons that do not fit the boots.
- Boots that pinch or let water in.
- A head torch whose battery dies in the cold.
- Mitts that make it impossible to handle karabiners.
- A sleeping bag that does not let you recover.
- Glasses or goggles that fog up and restrict your vision.
6. A road that is closed or unsafe
On Ojos the road situation is part of the route. Snow and wind can stop you driving up to the top camp. Trying to get around a restriction puts the whole group, and the vehicle, at risk.
7. An unsuitable weather window
Reserve days add flexibility, but they do not create good weather. If wind, visibility or snow remain dangerous, the right decision is to give up the summit.
8. A late start or a slow turnaround
Every team has checkpoints and a turnaround time. Hours lost in the morning cannot be recovered at night without consequences. The guide is judging not only the distance to the summit but the reserves available for a safe descent.
9. Mistakes on the final rock section
Someone puts on a harness for the first time, or cannot handle crampons on rock. Even a short section then takes far too long. Basic skills have to be practised before the expedition.
10. Poor recovery
Lack of sleep, not eating enough, dehydration and constant rushing about in camp all reduce your capacity for work. Outwardly someone may look healthy and then lose their pace sharply on the next outing.

- Building endurance and technical skills.
- Checking your kit before you fly.
- Eating, drinking, sleeping and layering up according to plan.

What you cannot control
You cannot order the weather, guarantee that the road is passable or know in advance how your body will react. A responsible expedition does not promise a summit; it creates the conditions for a sensible attempt.
What to do after turning back
First get down safely and recover. Then go through acclimatisation, pace, cold, equipment, food and decisions separately. Only after that should you choose a new date or a preparatory route.

Why the decision is so often made too late
You may feel you have already invested too much money and effort, and therefore have to press on. At altitude that logic is dangerous: the distance already covered does not shorten the descent and does not improve the weather. The later you turn back, the less strength and daylight you have left.
Checkpoints and timings are agreed before the start. The decision then rests on a plan rather than on an argument between exhausted people.
How to run a debrief after turning back
- Record the actual start and moving times
- Note the altitude and how symptoms developed
- Write down the weather and the state of the route
- Check what the participant ate and drank
- Go through how the clothing and equipment performed
- Separate the guide’s decision from personal expectations

When a second attempt should not follow immediately
After illness, severe exhaustion or marked altitude symptoms, the urge to use the remaining reserve must not take the place of recovery. Another outing is assessed by the leader according to condition, weather, time and the team’s resources.
Sometimes the best conclusion an expedition can reach is to come back in another season with longer acclimatisation. That protects your health and turns the experience of turning back into a genuine advantage.
It is worth keeping the notes from the debrief and showing them to your next leader. The new programme can then rest on facts rather than on a vague sentence about a previous attempt.
The five phases where Ojos stops a team
The reason for failure changes as the route progresses. In Copiapo it is more often documents and equipment; at Santa Rosa, the reaction to rapid height gain; on San Francisco, real working capacity above 6000 m; at Tejos, the combination of road, night out and weather; and on summit day, time, cold and the upper section.

How a vehicle masks a lack of acclimatisation
A vehicle changes your altitude quickly but does not create adaptation. You may feel fine on arrival and cope badly with the night. That is why the highest altitude reached on a day walk and the sleeping altitude are recorded separately. They are not interchangeable.
The short eight-day programme is only accepted with recent pre-acclimatisation no lower than 5000 m. Old experience remains experience, but it is not a current physiological foundation. If the preparatory mountain did not happen, or ended in exhaustion, the short Ojos is reconsidered.
San Francisco as a diagnostic day
On the standard programme, climbing San Francisco to 6018 m is a substantial effort in its own right. What matters is not only the summit but the pace, symptoms, eating, coordination and recovery once you are back down. A good photograph is no substitute for that data.

The road as part of the route, not a comfort service
Snow, wind and the surface itself can stop a vehicle below the planned point. The walking load then increases, and the timing, the night’s camp and the fuel margin all change. Carrying on with the old summit schedule without recalculating means ignoring the route as it actually is.
Before departure everyone knows who takes the decision, what the alternative camp is, where the communication points are and how an extra vehicle run is confirmed. A driver is under no obligation to take a vehicle over unsafe ground in order to protect a calendar.
Tejos: where earlier mistakes come together
A night at around 5800 m exposes a lack of acclimatisation, a poor sleeping bag, dehydration, uncomfortable boots and weak recovery. The refuge may be unavailable, so the tent option and the kit to go with it have to exist somewhere other than the marketing description.
Clothing, water, food, head torch, crampons, harness and the rest of the stated kit are all prepared before you sleep. Hunting for an item in the cold in the morning is not a minor delay: it eats into the weather window and creates pressure to hurry.

A universal turnaround time cannot be set without the date, the starting point and the conditions. Participants accept in advance that being close to the summit does not override the guide’s decision.
Why the upper rock section holds a group up
The section itself is short, but it sits at nearly 6900 m. An unfamiliar belay system, working in thick gloves, queueing and snow can all stretch the time it takes. Technical skill has to be checked in advance, and the guide decides how to protect the section according to the conditions on the day.
If one person cannot get through the section safely, pressure from the others is not an argument. The number of guides and how the group may split are discussed before payment, particularly on a private trip.

The group, the guides and splitting up
On the standard programme, local mountain guides work at a ratio of no more than three participants per guide. That does not mean any group can split into any number of subgroups. One guide cannot simultaneously escort someone who is turning back and carry on with the others.
On a private programme the number of guides is calculated for the group and for the expected spread in pace. In B2B logistics, the client’s own leader must have the authority to stop an attempt. A 4×4 driver does not become a mountain leader.
A debrief that avoids recycled conclusions
The chronology begins in Copiapo and ends with a safe return. Record the actual sleeping altitudes, the drop-off points, moving times, sleep, food, water, symptoms, weather, the state of the road, how the kit performed and the moment of the decision.

“The road closed” should include the place, the time and the change in workload. “Not enough acclimatisation” should include the profile of nights out and how things developed. “The weather got in the way” should include the decision and how the reserve was used.
When another attempt becomes justified
After turning back for medical reasons, recovery comes first, along with a discussion with a doctor who knows the person’s condition. After a technical problem, the skill is tested in training conditions. After a logistical failure, the specification, the contacts and the fallback plan are updated.
If the cause was purely external weather, there is no need to declare the preparation poor, but fitness and kit have to be kept up until the next season. If someone is exhausted after Aconcagua, the short Ojos is not a way of squeezing in a second summit.
A repeat makes sense when specific conditions have changed and the participant is ready to accept turning back again. Wanting to recoup money spent or to put a result right is not a safety factor.
Water, fuel and recovery in the desert
On Ojos, supplies are part of the route. Water is needed for people and for the kitchen, fuel for the vehicles and for cooking in camp. These categories cannot be held as one vague line item. A named person tracks the loading, the consumption and the reserve at each camp.
A shortage of water or food may not show up immediately. Poor sleep and weak recovery at Laguna Verde reduce your performance on San Francisco, and trying to make up for tiredness with a higher drop-off makes things worse. The debrief records what was actually consumed and what supplies were available.
The reserve is held for a specific scenario: a delay on the road or an extra night. It is not spent as ordinary stock in the first few days without the leader’s decision.
Weather and the road are different constraints
Strong wind can close the summit attempt even when the road is passable. Snow on the road can stop a vehicle when the weather higher up is acceptable. These causes are recorded separately, because they call for different responses.

When constraints coincide, their effects add up. A lower start and a strong wind cannot be assessed separately while keeping the old schedule.
The particular risk of the short eight-day programme
The short format does not contain the full Ojos acclimatisation. Its foundation is recent pre-acclimatisation no lower than 5000 m. Before it is accepted, the dates, sleeping altitudes, symptoms and recovery are checked, not just the fact of a summit.
If someone fell ill, lost strength or was injured on the previous mountain, retained acclimatisation does not mean retained reserves. After a combination with Aconcagua, the decision to continue is taken afresh before setting off for that remote part of Chile.
A mistake in choosing the short programme is rarely put right by one extra night at Atacama. Where the entry profile is missing, the standard scheme or different dates are chosen instead.
Equipment as a system, not a list
Boots have to fit the crampons, gloves have to let you handle karabiners, a head torch has to hold its charge in the cold, and a sleeping bag and mat have to let you recover. Checking one expensive item does not confirm that the system is compatible.
Before departure, put the whole outfit on, adjust the harness, fit the crampons wearing gloves and pack the rucksack. In camp, check your access to critical items after every reshuffle between vehicles.
A correct turnaround and a mistake in preparation

What counts as a good expedition without a summit
The team delivered the services confirmed, kept in touch, assessed the road and the weather honestly, did not conceal symptoms and turned back before its margin ran out. That outcome can be professionally correct even when 6893 m is not reached.
Quality is not measured by the promise of a second attempt. Sometimes the reserve goes on recovery or descent, and another outing would be unsafe. The decision is explained to the participants and the data kept for the debrief.
A short operational report
After the trip the leader records the drop-off points, the state of the roads, the camps actually used, moving times, the weather, water and fuel reserves, how the group split and the key decisions. Personal medical data are not published without good reason.
A report like this helps separate the characteristics of one season from the permanent characteristics of the route. The next team does not extrapolate a single snowy situation to every date, but it does know which fallback plan has already been needed in practice.
What to pass on to your next leader
A new team needs a verifiable profile, not the conclusion “didn’t make it because of the altitude”. Give the dates, the camps actually used, the sleeping altitudes, the San Francisco result, the starting point on the main day, the maximum altitude, symptoms, medication, pace, the reason for turning back and your recovery after the descent.

If the cause was a health problem, the manager is no substitute for a doctor. Discuss going back with a medical professional who knows your history and understands the nature of high-altitude effort. Your next guide will use that medical conclusion alongside the route data, but will not promise the same physical reaction.
The insurance and financial debrief
If a claim was opened, keep the reference number, the medical documents, the transport records, the invoices and the correspondence. Note separately whether you managed to reach the assistance service and what information was missing. That helps put your offline pack right before the next trip.
Extra nights, additional vehicle runs and ticket changes are checked against the contract rather than assumed to be covered by insurance. Financial pressure should never be the reason for another attempt. The decision to try again is taken on the basis of condition, weather, time and the resources left.
Checking the changes before a new booking

If the changes exist only as intentions, the second attempt is not yet any stronger. A new season is worthwhile when the corrections can be shown as a document, as training, as an updated specification or as real experience.
Before paying for a new programme, go through this list with the manager and with your future leader. Where something is not known, mark it as a question rather than filling it in with a guess. Keep the final decision together with your updated altitude summary, and add the confirmed changes to preparation, equipment and the guiding team.
