Preparation for Orizaba has to take account not of one summit day but of a series of climbs: Ajusco at 3900 m, Nevado de Toluca at 4680 m, Iztaccihuatl at 5230 m and Orizaba at 5636 m. What a participant needs is not top speed once but the ability to keep working and to recover between the stages at altitude.
The aerobic base
The foundation is regular long efforts at moderate intensity: walking on varied ground, running, cycling, stairs or any other cyclical format without constantly chasing a heart rate. The aim is to learn to work economically for a long time.
One hard session at the weekend is no substitute for consistency. Volume goes up gradually, leaving time for recovery and sleep.
Gaining height
Endurance on the flat is useful, but going uphill makes its own demands. Preparation needs climbs of stairs, hills or mountain paths. A pack is added by degrees, keeping the technique right and controlling the knees on the way down.
Do not start training with maximum weight straight away. Build the volume first, then add the specific load.
Strength endurance
The legs and the core have to hold a stable position again and again, rather than simply completing one heavy set. Squats, lunges, step-ups, pulling movements, calf work and core stability all help. Technique matters more than weight.
Strength work is combined with the aerobic side so that it supports the walking rather than making a long session impossible.
Descents
The programme does not end at the summit. A tired descent often demands more attention than the climb. Train a controlled step downhill, the use of poles, and the ability to hold your concentration after several hours on the move.
Pain in the knees or the feet during training is not something to put up with until the trip. It is better to have the cause looked at by a specialist beforehand.
Crampons and ice axe
The published route on Orizaba includes snow and ice. Before departure a participant should become familiar with the basic use of crampons and an ice axe. That practice is done on suitable ground and under the eye of a specialist, not from a video in the sitting room.

The test outing
Before the trip a long day in the mountains, or a pair of consecutive days, is worth doing. The test checks the footwear, the pack, the food, the water, the clothing, the poles and the recovery. It does not have to reach Orizaba’s altitude, but it does have to last long enough for the practical mistakes to show.
The last weeks
Before the flight the volume comes down, so that you arrive recovered. Trying to make up for missed months with hard sessions raises the risk of injury. By then the equipment should already have been tested and the sleep routine should be steady.
Any chronic conditions, medication and past problems at altitude are discussed with a doctor and reported to the organiser to the extent needed for a safe decision.
How to judge whether you are ready
The measure is not a single number in an app. What matters is completing a long ascent and descent in the right boots, holding a steady pace, eating and drinking normally, and being able to move again the next day. That readiness is then set against the acclimatisation scheme.
The response to altitude still remains individual. Good condition reduces the unnecessary strain, but it grants no immunity from problems at altitude.
How to spread the preparation across stages
Early in the cycle it makes sense to build consistency and put the weak points right: walking technique, feet, knees, back, sleep. In the middle part the ascents get longer and a pack is added. Nearer the trip come the specific long days and the technical practice, and then the volume comes down.
The exact weeks and loads depend on your starting condition, your age, past injuries and the ground available. A universal calendar drawn up without that information can do harm. If you are in doubt, have the plan written by a coach who knows mountain endurance.
Two days in a row
The Mexican programme demands that you can perform again the next day. So part of the preparation should test not only one long day but a steady effort on the day after. The second day need not be as hard: its purpose is to show how your body and your legs work on incomplete recovery.
If it takes several days to walk normally again after every long outing, the volume or the technique has been chosen wrongly.
Training at altitude
Physical condition and acclimatisation are linked but not interchangeable. Running at sea level improves how economically you work, but it says nothing about your individual response at 4000-5600 m. If a safe trip to the mountains is available, it is useful as experience, but it does not confer acclimatisation indefinitely.
Hypoxic devices and tents cannot be treated as an automatic substitute for the route itself. Using them calls for a separate professional assessment and does not remove the need for observation on the spot.
Recovery
Sleep, food and days without hard effort are part of the plan. Constant fatigue degrades technique and raises the risk of injury. Progress is judged not only by volume but by whether you can complete the next session without your form falling apart.
Warning signs before the trip
Pain that changes the way you walk, repeated dizziness, unusual breathlessness, loss of consciousness, chest pain and other marked symptoms all call for medical assessment. A plan found on the internet does not replace a doctor.
A practical test of the kit
The test outing is done in the boots, socks, pack and layers you plan to take. Get the insulation out several times, put gloves on, switch the torch on, drink and eat without a long stop. That is how you find the problems a list at home does not show.
An example of how a training week is structured
A week should combine different tasks rather than repeat one hard session. It needs quiet aerobic work, a session with height gain, strength training, a recovery effort and enough rest. As readiness grows, a long outing is added, and from time to time two days of movement in a row.
How many sessions and how long they last depend on the condition you start from. Someone only beginning to train needs consistency and freedom from injury more than anything. An experienced participant needs the specific work: uphill, with a pack, in the boots that will travel to Mexico.
Food and water in training
Long outings test more than the legs. A participant has to be able to drink and eat small amounts regularly, without waiting for real weakness. The food and drinks for the test sessions are chosen in advance, not for the first time on the day of the climb.
Training helps you find the awkward bottle, the valve that freezes, the food that is hard to get at in gloves, or the meal after which you cannot carry on. These practical details bear directly on holding a steady pace.
Pace for a series of volcanoes
On Ajusco and Nevado de Toluca the task is not to show your top speed. Those outings are part of a sequence leading to Iztaccihuatl and Orizaba. Too fast a pace at the start adds fatigue and makes your response to altitude harder to judge.
In training it helps to learn to walk evenly, to speak in short phrases without getting out of breath on moderate ground, and not to speed up in the wake of a stronger member of the party. In a group the speed is set by the conditions and by how people are, not by a personal record in an app.
Skills to test in advance
Before the trip a participant should be able to choose clothing for the weather, add an insulating layer quickly, adjust a pack, use poles, put on crampons and carry out the basic actions with an ice axe. Getting to know a helmet and a harness should not begin in the dark before the start either.
Being able to do something means more than performing it once on a practice slope. You need to repeat it in gloves, when tired and with a torch on, keeping order and keeping control of your equipment.
Common mistakes in preparation
The first mistake is to train only running and never prepare the legs for a long ascent and descent. The second is to increase the weight of the pack abruptly. The third is to put off buying and testing footwear. The fourth is to arrive tired after a last hard week.
Another mistake is to treat good condition as a substitute for acclimatisation. A trained person may move faster, but their response to altitude remains their own. That is why the published sequence of summits must not be shortened on your own initiative.
Checking your readiness before the flight
By the time of the trip a participant should be able to complete a long ascent and descent without pain, hold their technique with a pack, eat normally while working and be fit again the next day. Boots should not rub, and the clothing set should not require guesswork every time the weather changes.
If the test outing has found a problem, it is more useful to adjust the load, the footwear or the plan than to try to prove your readiness with one more hard session. The point of the preparation is to arrive strong and recovered.
A few days before the flight it is worth checking the documents, the insurance, the first-aid kit, the personal equipment and the airline’s limits once more. That check does not replace physical preparation, but it removes the mistakes that can wreck a climb you are otherwise ready for.
