Climbs of peaks 5000 metres high are not one level of difficulty but a whole mountain world. Among the 5000-metre peaks there are routes a well-prepared beginner can do with a guide, long high-altitude expeditions, and serious technical faces. So choosing your first 5000+ summit on the number in its name alone is rather like choosing a car by its colour. The number matters, but it does not answer the important question: what exactly will you be doing on the route?

How steep a mountain is has nothing to do with how high it is. Nor has how dangerous it is. You can fly in to 5000 by helicopter, or you can climb a face to get there. We offer either extreme and 50 shades in between. Elbrus from the west and a week alone in the snow is nothing like Kala Patthar in trainers with a glass of wine in the evening. What an altitude of 5000 metres means for the body
At altitude the percentage of oxygen in the air does not fall: its share stays roughly the same. What falls is the atmospheric pressure, and with it the partial pressure of oxygen. Every breath brings the body less usable oxygen, so your normal pace becomes too fast, sleep can get worse, appetite drops and recovery takes longer.
According to the CDC Yellow Book, the human body can adapt to moderate hypoxia up to about 5200 m, but that takes time. It does not mean that all is well at 5199 m and that a different planet suddenly begins at 5201 m. The boundary is a convention, individual reactions differ, and the rate of ascent and the altitude you sleep at often matter more than the height of the summit.
Good physical condition helps you keep walking, but it does not protect you from altitude sickness. A marathon runner with no acclimatisation can feel worse than a steady walker who came up gradually. That is exactly why a climbing programme should be judged not only on the number of days but on the schedule of high days out and overnight altitudes. High-altitude routes without difficult climbing
Ararat, some of the Kilimanjaro routes and the classic southern route on Elbrus are often chosen as a first meeting with 5000+. On programmes like these the technical side can be comparatively simple, but the altitude, the weather, the length of the walking days and the quality of the acclimatisation are all real enough. The word „accessible“ here means that you can prepare for the route and complete it under the direction of guides; it does not mean an absence of risk or a guaranteed summit.
Glacier climbs
Kazbek and many of the Elbrus routes call for moving in crampons, using a harness and rope teams, and understanding how to work on a glacier. For a participant this is no longer simply trekking at altitude. Even where individual sections are technically straightforward, safety depends on the state of the snow and ice, on the weather, on the team’s skills and on the guide’s decisions.
Technical 5000-metre peaks
Dykh-Tau, Alpamayo and other technical summits in this altitude band cannot be treated as an intermediate step simply because their height begins with a 5. Face sections, ice, rock, objective dangers and the difficulty of a rescue can make a route like that far more serious than many higher mountains. They call for a proven climbing record and confident handling of equipment.
Treks that go above 5000 m
You can try 5000+ for the first time without climbing a technical summit. Some Himalayan treks cross high passes or viewpoints above 5000 m while the group stays in lodges and walks a trail each day. A format like that shows how your body reacts to altitude very well, but it does not replace glacier skills and it does not automatically make you ready for a mountaineering ascent.

Before booking it helps to answer a few questions honestly:
- What is the highest altitude you have been to, and how long did you spend there
- How did your body react to sleeping above 3000-4000 m
- Can you walk in crampons and use an ice axe
- Are you ready to live in a hut or a tented camp for several days
- How long an effort can you sustain confidently at the moment
- Does the summit matter most to you, or the learning, or a fine journey, or preparation for the next expedition
Preparing for a climb of 5000 metres
Preparation depends on the particular mountain. For a trekking route, aerobic endurance, strong legs and the ability to walk with a rucksack several days in a row come first. For a glacier climb you add crampons, an ice axe, rope teams and self-arrest. For a technical summit you need full mountaineering skills, which you cannot pick up from a video the evening before your flight.
It is better to start systematic physical preparation well in advance. There is no need to test every day how thoroughly you can exhaust yourself. What you need is a gradual increase in volume, long steady efforts, work with altitude gain, strength training for the legs and core, recovery, and a check on your boots. When to move from 5000 m to summits of 6000+
Reaching a summit does not in itself mean you are ready for the next altitude. What matters more is understanding how you moved and how you recovered, whether you kept your appetite and your sleep, how independently you handled your equipment, whether you could make sensible decisions when tired, and how you coped with several high days in a row.
A good result on a 5000-metre peak is more than a photograph on the summit. It is the experience that leaves you knowing your own strengths and weaknesses. If the route took everything you had, the sensible next step may not be higher but technically or logistically harder at the same altitude. Common questions about climbing 5000 metres
Can a beginner climb a summit of 5000 m?
On some summits, yes, given good physical preparation, full acclimatisation and guiding. On technical 5000-metre peaks, beginners cannot. The decision is based on the particular route, not on the height of the summit.
Which 5000-metre peak should you choose first?
For a first experience people more often choose a route where the difficulty lies in the altitude and the endurance rather than in difficult climbing. But the choice depends on the season, on previous experience, on the time available and on the purpose of the trip. Ararat, Kilimanjaro and the classic Elbrus give you very different experiences, although all three belong to the same altitude band.
Do you need insurance for 5000 m?
Yes. The policy has to name the actual activity, the maximum altitude of the route, and search and rescue and evacuation if the programme requires them. Is Elbrus harder than Kilimanjaro or Ararat?
What you have to compare are particular routes and particular programmes. The classic Elbrus uses crampons and mountaineering equipment, and the weather on the summit can be very harsh. Kilimanjaro has no glacier technique on the popular routes, but long walking days and a fast gain in altitude create problems of their own. Ararat is technically easier than many of the Elbrus options, though the altitude and the weather still call for preparation.
