Holidays in the Elbrus region in 2027 – a way to see Elbrus, the glaciers, the waterfalls and the valleys of the Caucasus without committing to the summit. The programmes suit families, people accompanying a climber, older travellers, children, and anyone who is still wary of Elbrus or wants to test their own reaction to altitude first.

Children from 2 years old and Deuter child carriers
Children from 2 years old can take part. That does not mean a small child automatically completes every route listed. The guide sets the length of a walk, the pace and the altitude according to the child’s age, the weather and how the family is doing.
In Rock and Rent you can reserve German-made Deuter trekking child carriers in advance. A carrier helps on suitable paths, but it does not remove the limits set by the weather, the terrain and how long a child can spend at altitude.
The maximum altitude of the main programme
The high-altitude part takes place on the southern slope of Elbrus, around the Garabashi station and the high mountain huts. The maximum altitude of the main programme is about 3888 m. Going up by cable car lets you see the glacier and the snow, get a look at the start of the classic route and judge how you feel, without climbing to the summit.
The Pastukhov Rocks are an optional extra only
The route to the Pastukhov Rocks is not part of the guaranteed main holiday programme. Any outing above 3888 m is considered separately, for someone who is physically prepared. Whether it is possible depends on the weather, the state of the snow slope, the equipment, the accompaniment and how the person feels. The guide makes the final decision on the day.
The Pastukhov Rocks are not a stroll “just above the cable car”. At around 4700 m, the cold, the wind and walking on snow call for different clothing, different boots and a different assessment of the risks. Turning down the extra outing does not count as cutting the programme short.

Nine days
Trekking and holidays in the Elbrus region, 9 days shares its dates with many departures of the main nine-day climbing programme from the south. This is the best choice if one member of the family is going for the summit while the others want to stay nearby for the whole of their programme. For 2027 the published dates run from 24 April to 26 September.

Holidays in the Elbrus region, 7 days suits a shorter break. For 2027 five departures are published: in May, June, July, August and September.
What you will see
The routes run through the southern Elbrus region: Terskol, Cheget, the Azau meadow, the Devichyi Kosy waterfall, the valley of the Terskol river, the Narzan Valley and the southern slope of Elbrus. The exact order depends on the programme, the season, the state of the roads and the weather. In the mountains, adjusting a day is a normal decision, not an attempt to swap one attractive item for another.
Three levels of participation within one trip
A quiet holiday – walks around Terskol, Cheget and the Azau meadow, cafés, viewpoints and a return to the hotel with no long climbs. Families with small children choose this format, as do people for whom the views matter more than a sporting objective.
Active trekking – routes to the waterfalls, along the valleys and across the alpine meadows. The length of the day increases gradually. It calls for broken-in boots, a small rucksack, protection from rain and the ability to walk for several hours on an uneven path.
A first taste of altitude – going up by cable car to about 3888 m. This is a useful check on how you feel before a future climb, but one such day is not acclimatisation for the summit. Any further outings higher up are discussed separately and are not guaranteed.
Accommodation and day-to-day comfort
Every night is spent in a hotel. There are no tents and no stays in a high mountain hut. People set out on walks with a small day pack and come back down to the valley in the evening. Terskol, Cheget and the Azau meadow all have cafés, shops, hire outlets and cable cars.
A comfortable format does not turn a mountain day into a city excursion. Even in summer, above 3500 m you can meet sub-zero temperatures, snow, strong wind and limited visibility. Warm clothing and protection from rain and sun are needed whatever the forecast says in the valley.
What to bring
For ordinary walks you need trekking shoes or boots, a windproof and waterproof jacket, a fleece, thin gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sun cream and a day pack of about 20 l. In May and early June boots are particularly useful because of snow on parts of the routes. The exact set depends on the date and on the group’s plan.
Town clothing is not enough for going up onto the slopes of Elbrus. The temperature at the cable car in the valley tells you nothing about the wind and the cold at almost 4000 m. Anything you are missing can be hired, but it is better to confirm the size and availability in advance.
If part of the family is going for the summit
The nine-day holiday combines conveniently with the 9-day climb of Elbrus from the south, with the two-summits programme and with the traverse from the south. Those on holiday and those climbing stay in the same region and can meet up in the valley, but once the climbing group moves up to the hut their schedules separate.
The family programme remains a trip in its own right. There is no need to buy it only as an add-on to a climb: the Elbrus region is varied enough for a full holiday of its own.
When to come in 2027
In late April and May a great deal of snow remains high up, so the contrast between a spring valley and a winter slope is especially striking. June combines a long day with the active season. July and August are usually chosen by families with school-age children. In September the valley is quieter and cooler, but the cable car can be closed for maintenance; if that happens, the guide sorts out the logistics as the situation on the day requires.
Free days and optional trips
Some of the time can be given to a quiet rest or to an extra excursion. Horse riding, jeep tours and trips to the lakes, the gorges and the mineral springs are all possible. Activities like these are not automatically part of the main programme, are paid for separately, and are confirmed according to the weather, the state of the roads and the availability of transport. With small children the route and the length of the trip need agreeing in advance.
A free day does not have to turn into a competition for the number of sights seen. After several active days out, a rest, a proper night’s sleep and a walk around Terskol are often worth more than another early start.
