The short Everest Base Camp trek follows the classic Khumbu trail from Lukla to base camp inside a ten-day total trip. After reaching 5364 m the group does not walk the whole valley back: a helicopter flight shortens the upper part of the return to Lukla, after which participants fly to Ramechhap and drive back to Kathmandu.

  • Everest Base Camp at 5364 m
  • Seven consecutive trekking stages from Lukla to Gorak Shep
  • An acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar
  • Views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse and the Khumbu Glacier
  • The helicopter flight from the upper part of the route to Lukla is included
  • Two nights in a four-star hotel in Kathmandu and lodge accommodation on the trail
  • A Mountain Guide team leader with groups of four participants or more

The trip is built for participants with limited time, but it is not a lightened version of the classic trek. The rate of ascent stays fast and there is less opportunity to recover on the way back. Good physical condition, acclimatisation discipline and a readiness for several demanding days above 4000 m are required.

The trip price is fixed in US dollars.

Important

  • The total length of the trip is ten days; the "in a week" wording refers to the mountain section of the route only
  • The ascent of Kala Patthar is not part of the confirmed sequence of this trip
  • The domestic flights and the ground transfers connected with Lukla are paid separately
  • The helicopter flight depends on weather, visibility, loading and the decisions of the aviation service
  • The international departure after the trip must be planned with a margin for delays in the mountains
  • Mountain Guide does not sell air tickets and does not arrange visas

About the short Everest Base Camp trek

This trip follows the classic Khumbu route to Everest Base Camp but uses aviation to shorten the return. The group walks from Lukla through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Pangboche, Pheriche and Lobuche to Gorak Shep. After walking out to base camp participants return to sleep, and the following day, in suitable conditions, they fly by helicopter to Lukla.

The time is saved not by skipping the approach to Everest but by giving up the multi-day walk down. Participants therefore still see the main landscapes of the Dudh Koshi valley, the Sherpa settlements, Sagarmatha National Park, and the moraine and glacier of the Khumbu.

The main trade-off of the short trip is a tight schedule. The acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar is kept, but after it the sleeping altitude rises almost every day. The route needs no technical mountaineering equipment, yet it does not suit every beginner. Experience of multi-day walking and a proven ability to sustain prolonged aerobic effort are desirable. Before the trip, read the guidance on preventing altitude sickness and discuss your state of health honestly with the guide.

The helicopter does not remove weather risk. It may wait for a safe window, change the landing point, or not fly at the planned time. The decision belongs to the crew, and the lead guide then adjusts the plan. Participants who value spare days and a gradual return are better served by the classic fourteen-day trek.

The short route suits experienced travellers who already know how their body reacts to altitude and do not want to spend several extra days walking down. It can also form part of a longer trip to Nepal, but any additional excursions and nights should be planned after the reserve day.

A Mountain Guide team leader works with groups of four participants or more. For a group of up to three people a Nepali guide accompanies the group under the selected package. The team format is confirmed before payment.

Itinerary of the short Everest Base Camp trek

Day 1. Arrival in Kathmandu.

Participants fly into Kathmandu independently, where a team representative meets them and arranges the transfer to the hotel. After check-in the group meets the guide, checks personal equipment and goes through the tight schedule of the route ahead. Anything missing must be replaced before departure for the mountains. In the evening there is dinner in a Nepali restaurant. Night at the hotel.

Day 2. Flight to Lukla, 2860 m, and trek to Phakding, 2610 m.

Early in the morning we drive to Ramechhap airport and fly to Lukla. The airport and the departure time are confirmed finally before the trip. After the baggage has been distributed we begin the walk down into the Dudh Koshi valley and continue through small settlements to Phakding. The light load of this first stage allows recovery after the early start and preparation for the serious ascent of the following day. Night at a lodge.

Day 3. Trek to Namche Bazaar, 3440 m.

The trail runs along the river, crosses it several times on suspension bridges and enters Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo. After Jorsale a long climb to Namche Bazaar begins. This day sets the real pace of the whole trip: move steadily and do not try to speed up as the altitude rises. In clear weather the first view of Everest opens on the approach. Night at a lodge.

Day 4. Acclimatisation in Namche Bazaar, 3440 m.

We spend a second night at the same altitude. The guide organises an acclimatisation walk with a return to Namche Bazaar and assesses how participants are responding to altitude. This part cannot be skipped to save time: the next stage takes the group close to 4000 m. After the walk there is rest, preparation of clothing and attention to fluid intake. Night at a lodge.

Day 5. Trek to Pangboche, 3928 m.

The stage takes about five to six hours and includes descents and repeated climbs. Views of Ama Dablam and the peaks of the upper Khumbu open along the way. After check-in we plan no additional effort: the task for the evening is to recover and to tell the guide about any symptom that may have appeared during the day. Night at a lodge.

Day 6. Trek to Pheriche, 4240 m.

We continue climbing through more open high-mountain terrain. The air becomes drier and colder and the rate of recovery drops. The group moves at a steady pace and saves strength for the next two days, when the sleeping altitude approaches 5000 m. Night at a lodge.

Day 7. Trek to Lobuche, 4940 m.

The trail climbs to the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and to the memorial site between Thukla and Lobuche. At this altitude the limiting factor is not technical difficulty but the lack of oxygen. The guide monitors pace and condition, and participants do not conceal headache, nausea, weakness or loss of coordination. Night at a lodge.

Day 8. Gorak Shep, 5164 m, and Everest Base Camp, 5364 m.

After the walk to Gorak Shep we check into a lodge, rest and set out for Everest Base Camp. The route crosses uneven rocky ground along the Khumbu Glacier. Time at the final point is limited by the need to return in daylight and to keep strength for the aviation stage of the next day. If the weather or anyone’s condition deteriorates, the guide may change the plan. Night at a lodge.

Day 9. Helicopter flight to Lukla and return to Kathmandu.

In suitable conditions the group flies from the upper part of the route to Lukla. A fixed-wing flight to Ramechhap and a road transfer to Kathmandu follow. All three stages depend on one another, so the arrival time cannot be guaranteed in advance. If weather delays the helicopter or the aeroplane, the guide rebuilds the onward logistics together with the local team. Night at the hotel.

Day 10. End of the trip.

Breakfast and transfer to the international airport at the agreed time. Participants check in on their own. Despite the short format of the trip, it is better to plan the international departure with an additional margin after the return from the Khumbu.

Private groups - the short Everest tour

The short route can be run for a closed group, a family, friends or a corporate team. Dates, how you are accompanied, whether you need a porter, extra nights in Kathmandu and the standard of town accommodation are all quoted individually. The local operator confirms whether the helicopter stage is possible on your dates. The tight schedule cannot be speeded up by cutting the acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar or skipping any of the required overnight stops. If members of a group respond differently to altitude, it is safer to build in reserve in advance, or to choose the classic itinerary. The final decisions on how the group moves are the lead guide’s. A Russian-speaking leader from the Mountain Guide team and the make-up of the local team are confirmed before booking.

Documents for the short Everest trek

On a short trip it is especially important to tie the international flight, the flight to Lukla and the helicopter section into a single plan. Do not buy individual flight segments before the flights Mountain Guide recommends have been confirmed. The name on every ticket and on the policy must match your passport. The tourist visa rules, and whether a visa on arrival is available, depend on your nationality. Current information is published the Nepal Department of Immigration. Mountain Guide does not arrange visas and does not sell air tickets.

Documents

  • A passport with the validity Nepal requires
  • A tourist visa or another valid entry permit
  • International air tickets
  • Confirmations for the domestic aeroplane and helicopter segments
  • An insurance policy covering altitudes to at least 5364 m, search and rescue and helicopter evacuation
  • The insurer’s 24-hour emergency contact details
  • Your booking confirmation for the trip and the team’s contact details
  • Documents for a participant under 18, where these apply
  • Electronic copies of your passport, visa, tickets and insurance policy
  • Waterproof wallet for your originals

The permits for the trekking route are arranged by the local team. The general rules on TIMS and on the requirement to be accompanied can be checked on the website the Nepal Tourism Board.

Weather and flights on the short route to Everest

Settled weather windows matter especially on a short trip: the trip uses an aeroplane on the way in, a helicopter on the way back and a further flight after landing at Lukla. A single delayed segment can change when you get back to Kathmandu. Weather in the Khumbu valley changes with altitude. Lower down you can meet rain and humidity; above Pheriche there is wind, cold, snow and ice on the stony trail. Neither the temperature nor the state of the route can be guaranteed in advance. Your kit must let you keep walking in rain or snow and wait for a flight without getting dangerously cold. The main trekking periods are chosen outside the summer monsoon, but the season does not rule out cloud or the airport closing. The decision to fly is the airline’s; the decision on whether the group moves is the guide’s. Plan your international ticket after the route with time in reserve.

Accommodation and meals on the short Everest trek

The trip includes two nights in a four-star hotel in Kathmandu and nights in lodges along the route. Accommodation in Kathmandu is provided in the confirmed room category. A single room, early check-in, late check-out and extra nights are paid separately. In Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Pangboche, Pheriche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep the group stays in the mountain lodges available. The level of comfort falls as you gain altitude. The property and room type depend on how busy the route is; do not expect town standards from the upper lodges. Meals during the walking section are not included in the price. Participants order from the menu and pay for their own meals. In the higher villages the choice can be smaller and the service slower. For the day you walk up to base camp, carry a personal snack agreed with your guide.

Facilities on the short Everest trek

Showers. Hot water may be available for a charge in some lodges. At the high-altitude stops a shower is not guaranteed, so bring wet wipes, a small towel and a dry set of clothes.

Toilets. The form and condition of the washing facilities change as you climb. For night starts you need a head torch and light footwear that is easy to slip on in the lodge.

Electricity. Charging is often a separate service and depends on how each lodge generates its power. A power bank and spare batteries are essential, not least because of the waiting involved with the flights.

Internet and phone signal. Wi-Fi and a mobile signal are found along the route, but reliability is not promised. Weather and altitude can leave the group without any usable phone coverage for periods at a time.

Laundry. The fast altitude gain and tight schedule mean you cannot plan on proper laundry during the trek. Bring spare dry underwear and socks, and keep wet things away from your sleeping kit.
