Motorcycle touring in Ladakh: experience, preparation and kit

A motorcycle tour of Ladakh is a high-altitude journey on ordinary roads, not a run round a closed circuit. The rider has to keep track of the surface, the traffic, the dust, the weather, the altitude and their own fatigue all at once. Handsome photographs of the passes do not show the real work: hour after hour of precise riding with your concentration held.

The name Royal Enfield describes the character of the journey, but the exact model, specification, deposit and procedure for swapping a machine are confirmed before departure. Those terms cannot be inferred from a photograph or an old trip report.

What riding experience you need

Before booking, the rider states how long they have held a licence, which categories it covers, the machines they usually ride and their experience off tarmac. You need to be able to pull away confidently on a slope, turn round in a confined space, brake on a loose surface and handle a bike with luggage. Short trips round town on their own are not enough.

Useful preparation includes long days in the saddle, slow-speed manoeuvring, riding standing on the pegs and braking on gravel. Train in full protective kit: boots, gloves or a helmet that do not fit become a problem quickly, and Ladakh is a bad place to discover it.

The first 48 hours in Leh

The official Ladakh tourism portal requires at least 48 hours of rest for acclimatisation after landing in Leh before travelling to higher districts. That period is not something to replace with an unsupported outing of your own. At altitude a headache, weakness and disturbed sleep can dull your attention, and on a motorcycle a mistake costs more than it would on a quiet walk.

The plan for the first days is built without chasing passes. If a rider begins to feel worse, they stop gaining height and tell the group leader. Current advisories are published on the official Ladakh Tourism page; medical decisions are the doctor’s, and the decision about the route is the group leader’s.

Kit and luggage

  • A certified helmet in the right size.
  • Motorcycle boots, body armour, gloves and clothing that does not restrict control.
  • A windproof and a waterproof layer, both reachable during the ride.
  • A warm layer and spare gloves for the high sections.
  • Eye protection and sun protection.
  • Your own water, documents and the minimum kit that does not travel in the support vehicle.

Do not overload the bike with things brought “just in case”. How luggage is carried, the weight allowed and the carriage of spare fuel are all agreed with the local team. On remote sections everyone refuels together, even when a rider thinks their own range will cover it.

Documents, permits and column discipline

Before departure, check the national and international driving licences, the category you need, the age limits on hire and the exclusions in the insurance. Access to particular districts and roads depends on the permits in force and on conditions on the ground. Clearance is obtained for specific dates; last year’s route is no guarantee.

In the column a rider holds their place and their distance, does not overtake the leader without being told to, and stops for photographs only where it is safe. Photography near military installations and borders may be restricted, and a drone is not permitted by default. The local leader’s instructions take precedence.

Before the start the group also settles what happens if a bike goes down or is damaged: who is told, what the deposit covers, and when a rider may be moved into the support vehicle. Whether a mechanic or a back-up vehicle travels with the group is confirmed by the programme, not assumed.

How to choose the length

A short version means fewer districts, but it must not cut the compulsory acclimatisation. A longer one adds transfers only where the roads are open, the permits are valid and the logistics are confirmed. What to choose is not the largest number of passes but the load a rider can carry safely for several days in a row.

The current options are published on the page for the Ladakh motorcycle tour. Before tickets are bought, Mountain Guide confirms the chosen length, the machine, the support, the deposit, liability for damage, and the terms for transferring to a back-up vehicle where one is provided.
