Denali did not physically shrink by 26 metres in the space of a year. In 2015 surveyors refined the height of the summit using modern measurements: the official figure became 20,310 feet, or about 6190 m. The difference from the previous number arose mainly from a more accurate method, a different coordinate system and a different surface model, not from a huge part of the mountain collapsing.
What height was quoted before
Reference books used the figure 20,320 feet – roughly 6194 m – for many years. Another estimate, obtained by radar, gave a lower number. The field measurement of 2015 helped to bring the official figure into line.
Where the “26 metres” came from
Popular headlines compared different estimates and created the impression that the mountain had suddenly become smaller. But the measurements were made by different methods and did not necessarily describe the same point on the snow surface. It is more accurate to speak of a refined height.
How a summit is measured
Modern surveying uses satellite receivers, precise geoid models and post-processing of field data. On a snow-covered summit there is a separate question: is the snow surface being measured, or the rock beneath it? Small differences between sources therefore do not always mean that someone made a mistake.
Can the height change
Mountains do change through tectonics, erosion, glacier movement and snow cover, but processes of that kind do not explain the dramatic jump between the old reference figures. For planning a climb, a difference of a few metres has practically no effect on the route, the acclimatisation or the grade.
Denali or McKinley
The name has changed as well. In 2015 the federal name in the United States became Denali. In 2025 it was changed back to Mount McKinley, while the surrounding national park kept the name Denali National Park and Preserve. In Alaska, and in mountaineering usage, the word Denali remains widespread.
What to write in documents
To find current federal material, search for Mount McKinley; for the park, use Denali National Park and Preserve. In a Russian-language text it is convenient to give both names: Denali / McKinley.

Why the old maps disagreed
Height is measured not simply “from the sea” but from an agreed mathematical surface. Different sea-level models, coordinate systems and processing methods produce small discrepancies. On a remote glaciated summit you can add to that the difficulty of the field work and the layer of snow on top.
The 2015 survey
A team of surveyors carried satellite equipment to the summit and made field observations there. The data was then processed with a modern geoid model. The result, 20,310 feet, became the official reference figure. Converted into metres, it is usually rounded to 6190 m.
That does not mean every app is obliged to display an identical number. Some databases round, others keep the old value, and others still mix feet and metres. What matters for the reader is that the source and the date are stated.
Snow height and rock height
On snow-covered summits the surface point shifts with the season. A surveyed figure serves as a stable reference value, but it does not describe centimetre-scale changes in the summit snow cap. In a climbing report, precision to the metre often creates a false impression of certainty.
What changed for the Seven Summits list
Nothing of substance: Denali remains the highest peak in North America and one of the seven continental objectives. The new figure does not change its place on the list and does not make the expedition any easier.
What changed for the route
Neither the position of the camps, nor the height gained from the glacier, nor the acclimatisation requirements are recalculated on the basis of a difference between old reference numbers. A climber still has to carry loads, move roped up, use the fixed sections and wait out the weather.
Why the name and the height are so often confused
Both changes were discussed at roughly the same time: in 2015 the height was refined and the federal name Denali was restored. These were separate decisions – one geodetic, the other toponymic. In 2025 the federal name was changed again, but the height stayed the same.
How to check a dramatic headline
- find the primary source of the measurement;
- compare the units and the methods;
- check whether rock or snow is being described;
- separate a new estimate from a physical change;
- state the date of the reference figure.
The phrase “the mountain has become lower” is acceptable only as a question, followed by an explanation of the method – never as an established geological fact.
Converting the units. American sources give the height in feet. Converting 20,310 feet gives approximately 6190.5 m; different websites round this to 6190 or 6191 m. That is mathematical rounding, not a new measurement.
Older Mountain Guide articles. Where 6194 m appears in the archive, it reflects the earlier official figure. A historical quotation must not be corrected silently: a modern note should be placed alongside it. Current programmes use the present-day height with the source stated.
The practical conclusion. What matters more to a climber is the vertical gain from base, the height of the camps and the time allowed for acclimatisation. The argument over a few metres is interesting for surveying and for history, but it should not distract from the cold, the crevasses, the load carrying and the weather reserve.
