Aconcagua - the highest mountain in South America, the highest point of the Western and Southern Hemispheres and the highest summit in the world outside Asia - represents South America in the “Seven Summits” project. But for a member of an expedition the global ranking is not the only thing that matters: almost 7000 m dictates the pace of acclimatisation, the length of the programme and the price of any mistake.

The Mountain Guide website and its current programmes use 6962 m. That is a convenient rounding of the official figure of 6962.8 m given in the rules for the use of the Aconcagua provincial park. So when the question “how high is Aconcagua” is asked in the context of a climb, our answer is: 6962 m.
Reference books give the similar values 6960, 6961 and 6962 m. The difference arises from the year of measurement, the geodetic model, the reference system and the rounding convention. For planning an expedition a discrepancy of a few metres changes nothing. Something else is dangerous: treating the summit as an ordinary trekking peak simply because the classic route does not involve a difficult face.
Why Aconcagua is called an almost-seven-thousander
Formally the summit does not reach 7000 m, but the shortfall is less than forty metres. In climbers’ everyday language Aconcagua is often called an almost-seven-thousander. At that height the body works with a pronounced shortage of oxygen, and both the speed of movement and the rate of recovery drop noticeably even in a well-trained person.

Where Aconcagua stands among the highest summits
Aconcagua is considerably lower than the eight-thousanders of Asia, but higher than any summit in Africa, Europe, North America, Antarctica and Australasia in the common version of the “Seven Summits” project. That makes it a natural next objective at altitude after Elbrus, Kazbek, Kilimanjaro, the volcanoes of Ecuador, Bolivia or Ojos del Salado.
The sequence cannot be determined by a table of heights alone, however. Moving from the 5642 m of Elbrus to the 6962 m of Aconcagua adds more than simply 1320 m. Summit height and technical difficulty - not the same thing
The classic route on Aconcagua is not a technical climb on the level of Alpamayo or the hard lines of the Cordillera Blanca. In normal conditions the work consists mainly of long days of walking, scree, cold, wind and great absolute altitude. Even so, the state of the snow and ice changes, which is why the final equipment list is confirmed before the season.
The phrase “non-technical route” does not mean “an easy mountain”. At around 7000 m, feeling worse, moving too slowly or losing the ability to follow instructions all become grounds for turning back. Altitude makes simple actions slower - and small everyday mistakes more expensive.
What the altitude means inside the expedition

The main 17-day Aconcagua programme does not take you straight to 6962 m. It begins with the approach and nights lower down, then acclimatisation outings, base camp and a sequence of high camps. The calendar has a single purpose - to give the body time to adapt and to show that it is recovering before summit day.
A 12-day format and shorter ones are also published on the website. They are not an accelerated substitute for the standard expedition for all comers. Why the altitude you sleep at matters
It is not enough for a climbing CV to state the highest altitude a person once visited. What is needed is the altitude and length of the nights spent high, the time elapsed since the previous acclimatisation, any symptoms, the speed of movement and the quality of recovery. A day outing to 5000 m with a return to the valley is not the same as several nights in high camps.
Before enquiring, it helps to draw up a list of your recent mountains: the date, the route, the altitude of the day outing, the altitude you slept at, the length of the trip and how you felt. Those details make it possible to judge whether the 17-day programme is the right one or whether you really are ready for a short format.
What happens to the body closer to 6962 m
As you gain height, the available partial pressure of oxygen falls. The body responds with faster breathing and pulse and with changes in sleep, appetite and the rate of recovery. The reaction is individual: a strong athlete with no experience at altitude may acclimatise worse than a slower but experienced climber.
Headache, nausea, unusual weakness, loss of coordination and changes in behaviour must not be concealed for the sake of the summit. Altitude and summit day
The final climb to the summit comes after a series of stages and nights at altitude. You set out not fresh from a hotel but after living in high camps. That is why your personal pace is judged across the whole programme rather than on a single training ascent.

Does the altitude determine how long the climb takes
The height of 6962 m explains why a standard expedition takes more than two weeks, but you cannot calculate the exact time from a single figure. The calendar depends on the route chosen, on acclimatisation done beforehand, on camp logistics, on the state of the group and on the spare days. Two products on the same summit can differ in length and be designed for climbers with different starting experience.
You should not shorten a programme just because the daily stages look manageable on paper. The limiting factor is not how fast a healthy person walks at low altitude, but the ability to cope with consecutive nights high up, to recover and to keep a safe pace above base camp. That is exactly why a short programme requires acclimatisation gained in advance rather than simply stronger legs.
What the figure 6962 alone cannot tell you
The altitude says nothing about the quality of the route, the level of support, the accommodation, the food, load carrying, the number of spare days or where responsibility lies. Nor does it answer whether the permit is included, how the mules and high-altitude porters are organised, or what costs arise if you go down early. Those parameters are checked in the record card of the specific product and in the contract.
Comparing offers from different operators by the summit alone is therefore wrong. The name “Aconcagua 6962 m” may conceal a full expedition, a short module for an already acclimatised climber, or a package of ground logistics with no guide. Before paying, first establish the format, then compare the services line by line.
Preparation, insurance and the limits of planning
Can you prepare for 6962 m at sea level
At sea level you can prepare your cardiovascular system, your legs, your core and your feet, along with the habit of long days out and recovery between them. What you cannot guarantee in advance is your individual reaction to almost 7000 m. Physical training and acclimatisation to altitude therefore solve different problems.
If you have the opportunity, a recent climb above 5000 m before Aconcagua is worthwhile, preferably with nights spent high. Suitable stepping stones include the volcanoes of Ecuador, Ojos del Salado, Bolivia or Elbrus. The particular combination has to be built around the dates, so that the effect of the acclimatisation is not lost before the start.
Altitude, insurance and evacuation
Your insurance policy must cover the stated activity and a maximum altitude of no less than 7000 m, together with search and rescue and evacuation within adequate limits. Ordinary travel insurance with no altitude clause may not match the route.
