Preparing for Aconcagua is not a single test, nor a handful of hard sessions before the flight. What you need is the ability to keep moving at altitude day after day, to recover in a tent, to stay warm and to look after yourself when ordinary tasks take noticeably more effort.
The Normal Route is technically easier than Aconcagua’s ice lines, but the altitude of 6962 m remains the main limiting factor. A strong athlete with no acclimatisation may cope with altitude worse than someone of moderate speed but with good high-altitude experience.

Where to start
Begin with an honest assessment of your starting point:
- what is the highest altitude you have reached, and how long ago
- have you slept above 4000-5000 m
- how did your body respond to gradual and to rapid height gain
- have you completed several long walking days in a row
- can you pitch a tent, cook and look after yourself in cold and wind
- have you walked in crampons and used an ice axe, if the programme’s conditions call for it
The point of this assessment is not to qualify you on paper but to help you choose a realistic programme and identify the gaps before the expedition.
Physical preparation
Aerobic endurance
The foundation is regular moderate-intensity work: uphill walking, running, cycling, skiing, stairs. The key skill is to keep going for a long time without sudden changes of pace and to recover in time for the next day.
Increase the duration of your sessions gradually. Closer to the trip, pairs of consecutive walking days are valuable: they show your real readiness far better than one record-breaking outing followed by a week off.
Leg and core strength
Strength work supports your stability under a pack and the efficiency of your movement. A programme usually includes squats and their variations, lunges, step-ups, hinge movements, calf work and core stability. The load is increased gradually, without letting technique slip.
The aim is not a maximum lift in the gym but the ability to control your movement on the way up and, above all, on the way down, when fatigue has already built up.
Training with a pack
Pack weight depends on the programme, the porters you have booked and how the shared load is distributed. Train in the system you will actually travel with: boots, socks, pack, poles, clothing layers. Add weight in stages rather than trying to imitate the hardest day straight away.
If new boots or a new pack start rubbing on a short outing, the problem will only get worse on the expedition. Every critical item of kit must be tested before you fly.
Altitude experience and pre-acclimatisation
Training improves your capacity for work, but it does not create acclimatisation at sea level. Only time spent at altitude does that. On the classic 17-day programme, altitude experience helps you understand your own response and hold your pace with discipline. On the 12-day and especially the 7-day programmes, recent pre-acclimatisation becomes a key condition.
Which previous mountain, the interval between climbs and the altitude of your overnight camps are all matters for individual assessment. An old record of a summit several years ago is not the same as fresh acclimatisation before a short programme.
Technical and practical skills
Before the trip you should be confident with your personal equipment. Depending on the state of the route, that includes:
- fitting crampons to your own boots and walking in them
- using trekking poles and an ice axe
- changing clothing layers quickly in the wind
- protecting your face, hands and eyes from cold and sun
- organising your belongings in the tent and in your pack
- keeping up your fluid and food intake during a long day
The last few weeks before departure
In the final period it is too late to try to force your fitness up. Reduce your overall volume so that you arrive recovered rather than tired or injured. Check your equipment, insurance, documents, crampon and boot compatibility, batteries, spare gloves and wind protection.
Any chronic conditions, previous serious reactions to altitude and individual medical questions should be discussed with a doctor familiar with altitude medicine. A guide is no substitute for medical advice.
Signs that you are ready
- you handle long ascents comfortably at a steady pace
- you can repeat the effort the following day
- you move with your working pack without pain or loss of technique
- you know your equipment and are not putting it on for the first time on the expedition
- you have mountain experience relevant to the duration you have chosen
- you are prepared to turn back on grounds of health, weather or the guide’s decision

An example of how a training week can work
What follows is not a universal medical plan. The load has to be matched to your starting condition and any injuries. For Aconcagua, regularity and the ability to recover matter more than isolated record sessions.

How to prepare your legs for the descent
People often train only for the ascent, even though the long descent after the summit comes on top of accumulated fatigue. Controlled descents on stairs and on rough ground, stability exercises and a gradual increase in vertical gain all help. Pain in the knees or feet cannot be treated by adding volume; the cause has to be worked out before the trip.
A two-day test outing
A few weeks before departure, a pair of consecutive walking days is worth doing. Use your own boots, socks, poles and pack. The first day should be long but not destructive; the second shows how well your sleep, appetite, technique and willingness to move again have survived.
- Boots do not rub or pinch the foot.
- The pack does not cause localised pain.
- You manage to eat and drink regularly on the move.
- Clothing can be adjusted without a complete change.
- You still have something left for the second day after the first.
- Your torch and small items are accessible with gloves on.
How the length of the programme changes the requirements
The 7-day programme requires recent pre-acclimatisation: the minimum considered is an altitude of 5000 m, preferably 5500 m. The decision is based not only on the summit reached but on the altitude of your overnight camps, how you felt and the interval between routes.
The 17-day programme has the most complete altitude profile of the published formats. The 12-day version is tighter, and the 7-day Blitz is intended for climbers arriving with fresh pre-acclimatisation. The comparison is gathered in a separate article on the three programmes.

What exactly the training plan prepares you for
The Normal Route on Aconcagua does not ask for one maximal effort but for a sequence of different tasks. On the approach you walk for several days; at base camp you recover; during the high-altitude cycles you carry part of the load up; and before the summit you live and work higher still. Preparation therefore cannot be reduced to a running time or a maximum squat.

The phases of preparation for Aconcagua
The calendar is counted back from the flight, but its length depends on your starting condition. If you are coming back from injury or a long break, you extend the base phase rather than trying to cover the same volume faster.

What to record in a training diary
Kilometres on the flat describe mountain work poorly without duration, vertical gain and load. Record your moving time, ascent and descent, pack weight, surface, how you felt, nutrition, sleep and your willingness to train the following day.
The diary is there to show trends. One good outing does not cancel out several weeks of fatigue, and one bad session does not mean the cycle has failed. Pain that alters your technique should be discussed with a specialist, not masked with extra volume.
Vertical gain and descent
Uphill work can be trained on hills, on stairs or on an inclined treadmill. Continuous effort and a consistent stride matter more than the particular machine. Descending is trained separately and gradually: it is the eccentric load that so often exposes weakness in the knees and hips after a long climb.
If only flat routes are available, combine long walks, stairs and strength work. That does not replace mountain experience, but it lets you prepare the movement side without inventing an “equivalent of altitude”.
Strength work that does not conflict with endurance
Strength training supports the legs, back and core, but heavy sessions should not be scheduled so that they wreck your key long outings. Quality of movement matters more than reps to failure. Single-leg exercises help you spot differences between the legs, and work on the lower leg and foot supports stability in boots.
- A squat, or an accessible variant of it
- Lunges and step-ups
- A hinge movement for the posterior chain
- Calf raises
- Weight shifts and core stability
- Controlled downhill work
Specific loads and limits depend on your starting fitness. If you have injuries, agree the programme with a doctor or a physiotherapist.
How to train with a pack
Start by setting up the fit and learning to pack the load close to your back. Then increase either duration, or vertical gain, or weight, but not all the parameters at once. The actual working weight is confirmed against the programme you have chosen and the porters you have booked.
A training pack should not be deliberately heavier than the expedition one “for good measure”. That kind of margin turns very easily into pain and ruined technique. The goal is to do the required work consistently, not to prove you can carry too much once.
Training your eating and drinking
On long outings, test your familiar foods, your eating intervals, your access to water and packaging you can open with gloves on. Experimenting with a new gel or supplement leaves you unable to tell what caused a stomach problem.
After a session, judge not only the route you covered but your ability to eat properly and recover. A persistent loss of appetite at ordinary altitude is a reason to review your training load before the expedition.
A dress rehearsal for the high camp
An overnight camp is worth doing, one where you pitch the tent yourself, sort out your sleeping bag, protect your gear from the wind, pack up before dawn and work with gloves on. There is no need to simulate dangerous cold: the aim is to find an awkward system, not to get hypothermia.

Mental readiness and pace discipline
A well-prepared climber knows how to start more slowly than fresh legs allow, and does not turn the group’s day into a race. They report problems before those problems change their gait or behaviour, and they accept a decision to turn back as part of mountaineering.
In training it helps to agree the pace, the checkpoints and the reasons for ending an outing in advance. That builds the habit of acting to a plan at times when fatigue makes objective self-assessment difficult.
If you have missed part of your training
Missed volume cannot safely be compressed into the last few weeks. First work out what exactly has been lost: general consistency, long days, pack work, technical practice or a mountain route. Then discuss moving the date, choosing a longer programme or changing the objective.
After illness, come back gradually and in line with medical advice. A negative test or the end of a fever does not in itself prove full recovery for a multi-day load.

How the plan changes for different starting points
A regular runner already has an aerobic base, but may be short on pack work, slow movement over rough ground, stability on descents and practical camp skills. More running does not close those gaps by itself.
An experienced hillwalker after a break remembers how to organise a camp, but old fitness is not current fitness. The return starts with consistency and with checking feet, knees and back; weight is added once technique has been restored.
A strength athlete may handle short, heavy work well, but needs to develop efficiency over many hours and the ability to repeat the load. Body mass and a quick pace confer no advantage at altitude in themselves.
Someone coming from Elbrus is already familiar with early starts and with altitude, but the comparison is not just between summits. Aconcagua involves a multi-day approach, carries between camps and longer periods of self-sufficiency. How recent the experience is, and the actual altitudes slept at, matter more than the name of the mountain.

Checkpoints without a fitness exam
Instead of one hard test, use several checks. First, a long session without a pack shows your base. Then you carry that same steady pace onto rough ground, add your working load, and only after that put two days back to back.
The last big pairing should leave time for recovery and for sorting out equipment. Do not do it the day before you fly. If the second day collapses completely, work out why: too fast a first day, unsuitable food, footwear, lack of sleep or overall volume.
A checkpoint counts as useful even without a personal best, as long as it leaves you clear about what to change. The aim of preparation is predictable performance and a range of options, not a good-looking result in an app.
Preparing alongside your guide and manager
Give the operator your altitude history, how often you actually train, your limitations and the results of your test outings. On that basis you can discuss the length of the programme, porters, technical practice and a preparatory mountain in good time.
Feedback matters especially when choosing a short format. A manager does not write a medical or rehabilitation plan, but does need to know the facts that affect the route plan. Climber, coach, doctor and guide are each responsible for different parts of your readiness and cannot stand in for one another.
How to build a working week
A week is built around one main long session, not around daily fatigue. Easy aerobic work creates volume, strength work supports movement under a pack, and short recovery sessions help you stay consistent. Two days back to back are added once a single long day has stopped wrecking the following week.
Leave time to recover between hard sessions. You do not need a pack on every climb, and you do not need maximum vertical gain every week. If duration, ascent, weight and intensity all rise at once, there is no way to tell what caused the overload.

Your coach needs to know the date of the expedition, the route and the actual weight of your pack. A general “marathon” programme may leave out descents, boots, altitude experience and camp skills, so set the task explicitly as preparation for a multi-day expedition on Aconcagua.
Every few weeks, review the whole diary. If only your speed is improving, while duration, vertical gain and the quality of the second day are not, the plan has drifted away from the expedition objective. If volume is rising while sleep, appetite and technique get worse, another hard week does not count as progress.
It is worth defining in advance a minimum week that you can complete while travelling for work or during bad weather: a few short aerobic sessions, maintenance strength work and whatever vertical work is available. That fallback keeps you consistent without trying to make up for the gap in one excessive outing.
Judge every change against the route as a whole: you need reserves not just for the climb, but for pitching camp, recovering and descending safely.
What to do 30, 14 and 7 days out
30 days out: complete your main test pairing, resolve any footwear problems and confirm your programme. 14 days out: reduce your injury risk, close out your paperwork and give the kit a final check. 7 days out: keep your activity light, protect your sleep and your normal eating pattern, and introduce no new sessions or supplements.
If the test outing has exposed a serious gap, do not hide it for the sake of the tickets. The operator needs the facts in order to compare the 17, 12 and 7 day formats and avoid building a plan on a false assumption of readiness.
