The volcanoes of Ecuador differ in more than height. Some suit a first acclimatisation ascent, others call for work on a glacier, and others again are self-contained technical expeditions. The choice has to start from the climber’s experience and the current access rules, not from a photograph of a perfect cone.
The fourteen-day Mountain Guide programme uses four objectives in sequence: Pichincha, Rumiñahui, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. That chain allows altitude and difficulty to be increased step by step. Other volcanoes may be separate products, but they are not an automatic replacement for a summit that has been closed.
Pichincha, the first ascent at altitude
Pichincha stands right beside Quito. A cable car takes you to the start of the high-altitude walk, after which the route continues on foot. In the Mountain Guide programme this day is there to assess how people react to altitude, what pace they hold and how their equipment performs.
Pichincha is not a glacier substitute for Cotopaxi. Its role is to give the body a first controlled stimulus and to show how each climber recovers. Even here, wind, cloud and sudden changes of weather are all possible.
Rumiñahui, acclimatisation and movement on mountain terrain
Rumiñahui is used as the next step after Pichincha. The ascent stays below the big glaciated summits and helps to continue adaptation before the night climb. Climbers test their boots, poles, clothing layers and their ability to work several days in a row.
This mountain is not a formality either. If pronounced altitude symptoms or heavy fatigue persist afterwards, the Cotopaxi schedule is reconsidered.
Cotopaxi, 5897 m: an active glaciated volcano
Cotopaxi is an active stratovolcano. The official Geophysical Institute of Ecuador gives its height as 5897 m. The climb goes over snow and glacier and requires crampons, an ice axe, a rope team and a local mountain guide.
The main additional condition is official access. The route may be closed regardless of a group’s plans. The article “Climbing Cotopaxi” examines acclimatisation, skills and the procedure for checking access in detail.
Chimborazo, 6263 m: the highest point in Ecuador
Chimborazo is higher than Cotopaxi and is the programme’s main high-altitude objective. The Geophysical Institute gives 6263 m and the status of a potentially active volcano. The summit push starts at night and crosses a glacier.
Because of its position on the equator, the summit of Chimborazo is further from the centre of the Earth than Everest. For a climber the practical side matters more: considerable altitude, a long day, cold, crevasses and the need for a safe descent. The details are in the separate analysis of Chimborazo.
Cayambe, an objective in its own right
Cayambe is a high, glaciated volcano often treated either as a separate climb or as part of an extended Ecuador programme. It cannot be reduced to an “easy replacement” for Cotopaxi: the state of the glacier, the crevasses, the weather and the guiding requirements are all assessed separately.
If Cayambe is offered instead of a closed summit, the route, transport, overnight stays, permits, guide ratio and any change in price must be confirmed before payment. The decision has to be in writing.
El Altar, a technical expedition
El Altar is known for its shattered crater massif and complex terrain. It is not a standard acclimatisation mountain and not a product for a beginner. A technical objective requires its own itinerary, an experienced team, a reserve of time and a check of actual conditions.
The old article quoted a single universal grade and promised a night ascent as an invariable rule. Those formulations have been removed: the actual line and tactics depend on which summit of the massif is chosen and on the state of the route.
Carihuairazo is not a universal training mountain
Carihuairazo is sometimes used in acclimatisation and training programmes, but the gentle profile of certain sections does not guarantee that it is easy. The altitude, the weather and the state of the terrain all require local assessment. No beginner should be promised a fixed ascent time, and the volcano should not be treated as automatically safe.
If the mountain is included in a private programme, the training objective needs to be defined: movement in crampons, a check of acclimatisation, or a summit in its own right. Guides, equipment and duration all follow from that.
Why Reventador is not on the usual list of climbs
Reventador is an active volcano known for frequent episodes of activity. It must not be offered as a tourist climb simply because it is unusual. Access, volcanic risk and official restrictions take priority over commercial interest.
An earlier version of the article described Reventador as an opportunity for a confident mountaineer. That framing has been removed. Sporting experience gives nobody the right to ignore volcanic prohibitions, and it does not turn an active zone into a permissible route.
How to choose an objective by experience
- for a first assessment of altitude – Pichincha and Rumiñahui within a progressive programme;
- for a first serious glacier objective – Cotopaxi, but only when the route is open and after training;
- for a higher objective – Chimborazo, after sufficient acclimatisation;
- for an extended glacier programme – Cayambe, after a separate operational calculation;
- for technical mountaineering – El Altar and other complex massifs as a self-contained expedition.
Season and conditions
Ecuador has no single simple answer in the calendar that covers every volcano. Precipitation, wind, the state of the glacier and the local weather all matter. For active volcanoes you add official monitoring and the access regime.
The plan is built on the local team’s recommendations, and access is rechecked before departure and again before the ascent. A reserve day helps you work around the weather, but it does not override a volcanic closure.
What to ask the organiser
- which summits are included in the route you are paying for;
- which of them are open and who has confirmed access;
- who the local mountain guide is;
- what the ratio of guides to climbers is;
- where the glacier technique training takes place;
- what is included in the price and how a substitution is documented;
- how many reserve days there are and who decides to use them.

Can another volcano be added
It can, if it strengthens acclimatisation or is an objective in its own right and there is time for it. Adding a summit requires a separate check of access, guides, transport and recovery. The longer the list, the greater the risk of turning a logical sequence into a race with no reserve.
What you should not choose from a photograph
A symmetrical cone does not mean an easy route, and a lower summit does not mean less volcanic risk. Cotopaxi looks straightforward, yet it is active and glaciated. El Altar is lower but technically harder. Reventador cannot be treated as an ordinary tourist objective merely because it is spectacular.
A sound choice takes account of the current official status, the actual state of the glacier, the team’s qualifications and the climber’s experience. The name of a summit is only where the calculation begins.

The name of a volcano is not a finished product. For any objective, the route, the maximum altitude, the overnight stays, the transport, the guides, the permits, the equipment and the terms of substitution are all set down. It matters especially not to present Cayambe or any other volcano as an automatic equivalent when Cotopaxi is closed.
Which volcanoes should not be described together
Within the basic programme, Pichincha and Rumiñahui serve an acclimatisation purpose. Cotopaxi and Chimborazo are night ascents on glaciers. El Altar and other technical massifs require a separate expedition assessment. Mixing those genres creates false expectations about both skills and cost.
