Climbing 7000-metre peaks

Climbing a 7000-metre peak is no longer simply the next number up from Elbrus or Aconcagua. At 7000+ the body recovers less well, decisions have to be made with fatigue already accumulated, and help can be a long way off. What counts here is not only strength and motivation but a proven high-altitude record, the technical skills the particular route demands, self-sufficiency, and the ability to give up the summit in time.

7000-metre peaks cannot be ranked on altitude alone, or on a reputation as “the first” such mountain. Lenin Peak, Muztagh Ata, Himlung Himal and Khan Tengri call for different technical experience and different degrees of self-sufficiency. Comparing an average 7000-metre peak with an average 8000-metre peak is a deliberately provocative line, but the point behind it is practical. Many of the 7000-metre peaks of the former USSR are climbed with less high-altitude service, without continuous oxygen, and by technically hard or objectively dangerous routes. A commercial expedition to a popular 8000-metre peak may have a fixed line, high-altitude workers and oxygen support. That does not make 8000 m physiologically easier or safer. It shows why altitude never replaces a description of the route and of how the expedition is organised.

What happens to the body at 7000 metres

On 7000-metre peaks we are talking about extreme altitude. The body can adapt in part, but it cannot recover fully or live indefinitely in high camps. Maximum physical capacity falls sharply, sleep and appetite get worse, dehydration and weight loss accumulate, and simple everyday tasks take unexpectedly long.

Scientific observation shows that compensation in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood preserves some of the body’s capability up to roughly 7000 m, but above that level the limits become particularly marked. That does not mean there is one magic mark. The weather, the temperature, the rate of ascent, the length of your stay, the acclimatisation and individual physiology all change the picture. The practical conclusion is simpler: high camps are for working, and recovery has to be found lower down.

At this altitude it is dangerous to blame everything on “the altitude”. Weakness can be the result of altitude, infection, dehydration, chilling, exhaustion, or several of those at once. A guide judges not one saturation figure but how the condition is developing, along with coordination, breathing, pace, behaviour and whether the person can still look after themselves.

Four Mountain Guide 7000-metre peaks, four different tasks

Lenin Peak

Lenin Peak is often called one of the most accessible 7000-metre peaks. That description refers to the standard route and to well-developed seasonal infrastructure, not to the mountain being easy. The expedition is still long, the route crosses a glacier, the weather can close the summit off, and a substantial part of the work is done at extreme altitude. For many people it is a logical first 7000-metre peak after confident climbs at 5000-6000 m.

Muztagh Ata

Muztagh Ata attracts people with its long snow route and the chance to use skis, depending on the format of the programme and the conditions. The technical ground may look calmer than on Khan Tengri, but the sheer altitude, the long stages, the weather and the need to handle high camps competently do not go away. You need experience of self-sufficient high mountains and confident command of whatever method of travel the programme sets out.

Himlung Himal

Himlung Himal gives you the experience of a Himalayan expedition: long logistics, a base camp, acclimatisation rotations, high camps and work on a fixed line. It can be seen as an important step before an 8000-metre peak, but only where experience and current form match. The mere presence of fixed ropes and a high-altitude team does not remove your own responsibility.

Khan Tengri

Khan Tengri is a technically serious summit, where altitude combines with steep mixed ground, objective dangers and a demanding expedition environment. For someone whose record is the classic Elbrus alone, it is not a sensible first 7000-metre peak. You need technical climbs, confident ropework and experience of making decisions in high mountains.

This table does not replace a selection process. Even a route that looks logical on paper may not match your current physical condition, the season or the actual state of the mountain. Before confirming a place we ask how the previous climbs went, what overnight altitudes were reached, how much of the work the person did themselves and which technical skills they have.

The minimum experience before a 7000-metre peak

There is no single list covering every route, but a grown-up conversation about 7000+ usually starts here:

  • Several high-altitude climbs, not one lucky day out
  • Experience of sleeping above 5000 m, or expedition experience of comparable logic
  • The ability to keep to a routine, eat properly and stay clean for several weeks
  • Confident work in crampons, in a harness and on fixed ropes
  • Glacier travel and self-rescue skills to the level the route requires
  • The ability to carry some personal and group equipment, if the programme calls for it
  • An understanding that the summit is not a paid-for service and cannot be guaranteed

If someone has never slept in a tent, cannot put crampons on with gloves and expects to “be taught everything on the spot”, they need a lower training or expedition programme first. A 7000-metre peak is a poor place to meet all the basic skills at once.

Preparing for a climb of 7000 metres

Preparation takes months and has to be tied to the route. General endurance remains the foundation, but to it you add work with altitude gain, strength endurance, carrying a rucksack, recovery between long sessions and technical practice. The last weeks before you fly are not for heroically finishing yourself off but for reducing the load and arriving at the start healthy.

Preparation for Lenin Peak and for Khan Tengri cannot be the same. The first calls above all for long high-altitude work and self-sufficiency; the second also for technical speed on steep ground. Muztagh Ata may require specific ski preparation, and a Himalayan expedition an understanding of work on fixed ropes and of oxygen logistics at the next level up.

Before choosing a training plan, read the principles of acclimatisation, the requirements of the particular programme, the insurance terms and the equipment list. High-altitude boots, down clothing and your sleeping bag all have to be tested beforehand. An expedition is an expensive place to discover that your boots rub.

Self-sufficiency, guides and what rescue can do

A guide makes the tactical decisions, organises how the team moves and helps reduce the risks. But on a 7000-metre peak they cannot breathe, eat, dress or walk for you. The higher the camp, the smaller the whole team’s reserve of strength and the more expensive any delay becomes.

Helicopter evacuation depends on the region, the altitude, the weather, the visibility, whether an aircraft is available and the rules of the particular country. An insurance policy does not conjure a helicopter out of a cloud and does not guarantee an immediate flight. A safety plan has to include communications, registration, clear check-in deadlines, a reserve for the descent and a realistic understanding of what ground assistance can do.

When a 7000-metre peak becomes preparation for 8000 m

Not every successful 7000-metre peak is equally useful before an 8000-metre one. What matters is the length of the expedition, the altitude of the camps, the rotations, the cold, and technical and practical self-sufficiency. If someone reached the summit but never worked out how to manage themselves on an expedition, their list of achievements has grown faster than their experience.

Before moving up to 8000 m it helps to go through the expedition with the leader: where the pace was lost, how recovery went, whether there were symptoms of altitude illness, how much help was needed, how the clothing performed and what happened on the descent. Only then does it make sense to choose an 8000-metre peak.

Common questions about climbing 7000 metres

Which 7000-metre peak counts as the first one?

Lenin Peak comes up most often, thanks to its standard route and its seasonal infrastructure. But “often the first” does not mean “for beginners” and does not guarantee success. The choice depends on previous experience, technical skills, the region and the format of the expedition.

Can you go to Lenin Peak straight after Elbrus?

Strong participants sometimes do, but as a general ladder it is too big a step. Between a short climb of Elbrus and a multi-week expedition to 7000 m it helps to gain experience of 6000+, of high camps and of running your own camp life. The decision is made after reviewing the actual experience.

Do you need oxygen on a 7000-metre peak?

On most of the classic programmes for the 7000-metre peaks of the former USSR, supplementary oxygen is not a standard part of the climb. On Himalayan programmes the tactics can differ. Whether emergency oxygen, a medical kit and high-altitude support are provided has to be checked in the particular programme, not assumed.

How long does preparation take?

The physical cycle often takes several months, but climbing experience does not fit into a calendar plan. If the technical skills and the high-altitude expeditions are not there, you need intermediate mountains and training first. Six months of training does not replace several seasons of considered experience.
