A private climb of Kilimanjaro

A private climb of Kilimanjaro

Your own team, a route matched to your experience, dates of your choosing and support from a Russian-speaking guide. The private format is available to a single climber, a family, friends and a company group.

Request a private programme

People choose a private climb for more than the privacy. It lets you set the duration around your experience at altitude, avoid depending on the pace of a group of strangers, check the equipment properly, and combine the climb with a safari or a stay in Zanzibar in advance. The national park rules, the guides’ decisions and the safety requirements still apply in full.

What the private format gives you

  • A mountain team of your own, for your own party
  • A Russian-speaking guide or trek leader from the Mountain Guide team , costed individually
  • A choice of confirmed dates, available routes and durations
  • An assessment of each participant’s experience beforehand
  • The option of adding an acclimatisation or spare day, where the programme allows it
  • An agreed format for a family, for friends or for a company team
  • Continuing the trip with a safari or Zanzibar

How to choose a route

Lemosho: the main choice for a first climb

Lemosho gives you seven days on the mountain, the acclimatisation climb to Lava Tower and separate stages through Karanga and Barafu. For a private group this route is convenient because it combines a sensible duration, varied terrain and the chance to watch how someone is doing without rushing.

Machame: faster and tighter

Machame includes six days on the mountain in its basic version. It suits physically strong people and those who already know how they react to altitude. For a beginner on a private trip, it makes sense to discuss an extra day rather than treat a compact schedule as an advantage in itself.

Marangu: huts, but short acclimatisation

Marangu is chosen for the nights in mountain huts. The basic programme is fast, so the comfort of a roof should not create a false impression that the altitude is easy. A private version lets you discuss a longer schedule in advance.

Rongai and the Northern Circuit

Rongai is interesting for its northern approach and the quieter lower section. The Northern Circuit suits anyone who wants more time on the mountain and a long arc around Kibo. These routes open only once the dates, the price and all the operating conditions are confirmed.

A private climb all year round

The calendar can be worked out for any month, provided the route is open and there is a confirmed team. January to early March and June to October are usually drier. In March to May and October to December the chance of rain is higher. April, May and November call for particularly serious waterproofing.

We do not close the rainy months automatically: the May holidays remain an important window for Russian clients. But before the contract we set out plainly what that means day to day: wet paths, difficulty drying clothes, fog, fewer views and a higher risk of losing your pace.

One climber, and a small private group

The local mountain team can look after a single climber, if that is confirmed in the costing. Support from a Russian-speaking guide for a group of fewer than four is not included automatically and is costed separately. Only services, accommodation, meals, permits and transfers confirmed in writing go into the proposal.

Families and children

Age on its own does not replace an assessment of health, endurance and experience at altitude. For anyone under age we ask for medical advice, the consent of their legal guardians and confirmation from the operator that they may take part. The decision is made case by case, and the summit cannot be a compulsory family goal.

A corporate climb

For a Russian company, Mountain Guide can draw up a contract, issue an invoice and accept payment by bank transfer. The programme is built not as team building at any price but as a high-altitude journey with individual entry criteria. A corporate client receives the cost structure, the list of documents, the rules for changing the programme and the insurance recommendations in advance.

If the participants are prepared to different degrees, we discuss extra guides, fallback options and a clear procedure for an early descent. Nobody should carry on climbing for the sake of a group result at the expense of their health.

How the preparation works

Safari and Zanzibar after a private programme

A private climb is easy to combine with a safari in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire or with a stay on Zanzibar. The continuation is costed around your international tickets and the standard of accommodation you want. Internal flights, transfers and hotels are not counted as included until they appear in a confirmed proposal.

What to send us for a costing

  • The number of participants and their ages
  • Nationality and departure city
  • Your preferred month and the range of dates that would work
  • Each participant’s experience of altitude and of multi-day trips
  • The route you want, or your priority: acclimatisation, speed, huts, privacy
  • Whether you need a Russian-speaking guide whatever the size of the group
  • Whether you want a safari, Zanzibar or both
  • For a company group, the registration details and the reporting documents required

A private expedition starts with an accurate costing

How a private climb differs from a mixed group

On a private programme the whole team is built around one person or a party who already know each other. There is no waiting for a minimum number and no fitting in with people whose leave falls elsewhere. The start date, the route, the duration and any extra days are agreed before booking, and the pace within the permitted schedule follows the actual condition of your own group.

A private format does not mean camps can be skipped, acclimatisation dropped, or the summit demanded when someone feels unwell. The national park, the altitude and the weather are the same for everyone. The decision to set off and to turn back stays with the guides.

A private climb for one person

A single climber gets a local team to themselves and an individual costing. It is the most flexible option for dates, but the cost is not shared between a group. You can choose full guiding by a Russian-speaking guide from Mountain Guide or a separate product with a local English-speaking guide.

For a first experience at altitude we do not shorten the programme simply because someone is going alone. On the contrary, an individual format makes it easier to keep an eye on the pace, the food, the sleep and the reaction to altitude.

Family, friends and a private team

A private trip is convenient when people want to travel only among themselves. A family does not have to fit its routine around strangers, friends can share out rooms and tents in advance, and a company group gets a shared objective and clear communication.

Each person’s level is still assessed individually. The strongest member should not drag the weakest along faster than a safe pace. If the preparation differs noticeably, we discuss extra guides and a plan for splitting the team in advance.

Which route to choose for a private Kilimanjaro

Lemosho remains the all-round choice for a first climb: the western approach, the Shira Plateau and a more gradual logic. Machame suits a physically strong team that wants a full-on route. Marangu is chosen for the huts, in the knowledge that the basic schedule is shorter.

Rongai gives a northern approach and appeals to people coming back for a second time. The Northern Circuit takes more time but offers a long acclimatisation and quieter sections. A private date is particularly useful for the rarer routes, which have fewer scheduled group departures.

A Russian guide or a local guide

A Russian guide is not there to translate the names of the camps. They talk to you constantly, know your preparation before the trip, notice changes in your condition and connect the local team’s work with what the client expects. For anyone without confident English, that is an important part of safety and of comfort.

A local English-speaking guide suits independent travellers who are happy to communicate directly and do not need a Mountain Guide representative on the route. Both formats use the local team, the national park permits and the same safety rules.

A private climb with children

Age on its own does not prove readiness for altitude. For anyone under age we look at their health, their experience of multi-day trips, their ability to report symptoms calmly and their genuine motivation. Parents should not turn a family goal into pressure on a child.

The minimum age, the park rules, the insurance and the guardians’ consent are all checked before booking. Even where the formal requirements are met, a guide may recommend a lower, gentler route for a first family experience.

A corporate Kilimanjaro

For a company the mountain becomes a powerful shared story, but it takes more organising than an ordinary trip. You need an early assessment of fitness, a single equipment list, oversight of the medical questionnaires, extra guides and a clear plan in case the team has to split.

A corporate programme can include a shared briefing before the trip, training, branded kit, photography and video, a safari and a closing event. Each additional service is confirmed separately; the substance of the mountain programme itself is not sacrificed to the event.

Individual dates and holiday weeks

A private start is possible all year round, subject to the local team being confirmed. Demand is highest over New Year, at Western and Orthodox Christmas, over the May holidays, in the summer holidays and at the start of autumn. In those periods convenient flights, hotels and places with Russian guides run out earliest.

April and May are wetter, but for some clients the May break matters more than perfect statistics. We do not hide the conditions: the forest paths will be wetter, drying things is harder and there is more cloud. With the right equipment the climbs are possible, but the choice has to be made with eyes open.

An extra day, and a night in the crater

An extra acclimatisation day can be discussed on Marangu, Machame and other routes, where the schedule fits the park rules and the team’s work. It affects the budget, but it is not a decorative surcharge: an extra night changes the load and gives time to watch how people are doing.

A night in the crater is considered only for well-prepared participants. The altitude of that camp, the cold and the impossibility of recovering quickly make it an expedition objective in its own right. Whether it is possible is confirmed after an assessment of experience, and the guide keeps the right to drop it because of the weather or the state of the team.

What goes into the costing

The total depends on the number of participants, the route, the days on the mountain, whether the guide is Russian or local, the number of local guides, the permits, the porters, the meals, the hotels, the transfers and any additional programmes. For one person the fixed costs fall differently than they do for four or six.

We do not publish an arbitrary “from” price if it does not match the date and party you have chosen. Once you enquire, a costing is prepared with a clear list of what is and is not included. Flights and visas are arranged by the participant.

What can and cannot be changed in a private programme

You can choose the date, the route, the number of days, Russian or local guiding, the category of hotel and what happens after the mountain. You can request an extra guide, a single tent, a training day and special catering, if the host team confirms that it is possible.

You cannot waive the park fees, remove the local specialists who must be there, exceed the set load limits for porters, or carry on after a decision to turn back. You cannot replace acclimatisation with a promise of good physical condition. Every change is recorded before payment, so that a private trip does not turn into a collection of verbal expectations.

Medical information and confidentiality

Before the trip you tell us about chronic conditions, allergies, medicines you take regularly and how you have reacted to altitude before. That information is not there to judge your character but to plan for the risks. It does not replace a consultation with a doctor and does not give the organiser the right to make a diagnosis.

On the mountain there is a daily check on how people are feeling. Symptoms must not be hidden even in a private group, where the summit is a personal dream and nobody wants to let the others down. If there are signs of dangerous altitude sickness, going down matters more than the extra days you have paid for.

Checking your equipment before the start

A private programme gives you more flexibility, but it does not exempt you from the compulsory list. Boots have to be broken in, the sleeping bag has to match the cold, the shell has to keep the rain out and the torch has to last the whole summit night. Anything missing is identified before you set off, while there is still time to arrange a hire or a purchase.

For a family or a company group, a shared online check a few weeks before departure is worth doing. It reduces the risk that one person arrives without warm gloves, another with a town sleeping bag, and a third opens the box their boots came in for the first time in Moshi.

Safari and Zanzibar on a private trip

The private format is the easiest to combine with a safari after Kilimanjaro and with Zanzibar. There is no waiting for a whole mixed group: the vehicle, the lodges, the flight to the island and the hotel are all chosen for your own team.

The combination is worked out backwards: first the international return flight and the margin it needs are fixed, then the island or the safari, and only then is the descent from the mountain slotted in. That reduces the risk of losing an expensive part of the journey to a schedule that is too tight.

What to send us for an accurate proposal

  • The earliest possible arrival day and the latest acceptable return day
  • The number, ages and nationalities of the participants
  • Previous experience of altitude and of trekking
  • Whether you prefer tents or huts
  • Whether you need a Russian-speaking guide
  • Any interest in a safari, in Zanzibar or in a night in the crater
  • Health and dietary details that affect the arrangements

After that we propose two or three realistic options, rather than a long list with no recommendation. The programme becomes confirmed once the route, the services, the payment and the written confirmation are all agreed.
