About the tour

Itinerary for climbing Broad Peak with a guide.

Day 1. Transfer from Islamabad airport to hotel. Visit the local Ministry of Tourism in the afternoon followed by a sightseeing tour of the old city of Rawalpindi. Dinner and instructing the group. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2. 11-12 hour drive from Islamabad to Chilas via the Karakoram Highway (a spectacular engineering marvel linking Pakistan and China). Meals and overnight at hotel.
Day 3. 8-9 hours drive from Chilas to Skardu on the Karakoram Highway along the Indus River. Meals and overnight at hotel.
Day 4. A rest day in Skardu to pack food and equipment for the Broad Peak climb.
Day 5. A jeep drive to Askoli (3,000m) via six villages in the Shagar valley (Askoli being the last settlement in the valley). It is a most spectacular 7-8 hour drive, crossing the Braldu River several times and passing such spectacular spots as hot sulphur springs near Thongal village and copper coloured stones, famous for local legends about a mythical ruler King Kiser, known for his magical powers. Overnight at camp.
Day 6. A 4-5 hour trek from Thongal to Johla at an altitude of 3300m. The route follows the banks of the river to the confluence of the Bumordo and Biafo rivers and then crosses (by cable) the Domordo river, which flows from the Panmah glacier. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of Bakhor Das Peak and the magnificent Biafo Glacier. Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 7. This day’s ascent of Broad Peak is an undulating 5-6 hour hike from Johla to Paiyu (at 3,650m). The route is difficult at times, but this is compensated by the first views of the magnificent mountains ahead. We’ll take a break by a stream that flows down from Paiyu Peak, by some tamarisk trees. The path leads to a spot where we can see the snout of the Baltoro glacier, the Cathedral Towers in the distance and the unique triangle of K2. Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 8. A rest day at Paiyu, spent exploring the area and Porter preparing food for the trek ahead. Overnight and meals in camp.
Day 9. A 6-7 hour trek to the next destination in the Broad Peak climbing plan, Urdukas at 4,210m, a place so named because of the obvious split boulder. Crossing the glacier, the path bends towards its south-eastern edge and heads towards the ablation valley at Liligo. Leaving the glacier to avoid the outflow of the advancing Liligo glacier, the route is a succession of lateral moraines and glaciers. From the campsite at Urdukas you can enjoy incredible views of Paiyu Peak, Uli Biaho, Great Trango Tower, Lobsang Spire and Cathedral Towers. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 10. Trek for 5-6 hours to Goro II at an altitude of 4,525 m. From here you can enjoy views of Mt Masherbrum and Muztagh Tower. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 11. A 5-6 hour trek from Goro II to Concordia at 4700m with a good chance to see 7000m and 8000m peaks such as K-2 (Chogori), Broad Peak, G-I, G-II, Sia Kangri, Muztagh Tower, G-IV, Miter Peak and Golden Throne. The same day, after lunch, we continue the trek to Broad Peak Base Camp.
Days 12-41. These 29 days of the Broad Peak climbing program will be spent in climbing and summiting activities with accommodation and meals at the base camp.
Day 42. Descend from Broad Peak BC to Concordia. Overnight and meals in camp.
Day 43. Trek all day from Concordia to Ali camp at 4800m, overnight and meals in camp. The first two hours of the trek are challenging as the route crosses the Baltoro Glacier and its crevasses. The trek is relatively easy and gradual over snow and ice, with the impressive Chogolisa standing guard to the south. Sleep early, as we have to get up at midnight for the trek over Ghondogoro La.
Day 44. Trek from Ali camp to Khursipin after crossing the Gondogoro La pass (5’680m). We leave camp at around 1:00am to climb Gondogoro La. For the first two hours we’ll walk on the lateral moraine to avoid crevasses. As we get closer to the pass, we switch to a snowy route until we reach the base of the pass. The final ascent is a steep walk on snow, using fixed ropes (where necessary), crampons and ice axe. From the top of the pass you can enjoy amazing views with K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I to IV, Masherbrum and many other mountains appearing at the same level as us. The descent on the Hushe side is steeper and requires good balance on the rocks. Meals and overnight in camp.
Day 45. A 5-6 hour trek from Khurspan to Shaitcho through wild rose, cedar and tamarisk bushes. After gradually leaving the icy landscapes we descend to the meadows and pastures of Shaitcho (3750m). From here you can also enjoy stunning mountain views of Namika Peak and Defokhar. Dinner and overnight at camp. Overnight and meals in camp.
Day 46. The day is spent trekking along the east bank of the river to Hushe (3,200 m). The Hushe valley runs from the Masherbrum mountains in the south to the Shyok river opposite Khaplu. Hushe, the last village in the valley, is about 140 km east of Skardu and is the starting point for treks to various summer pastures on five glaciers. We descend to the Gondogoro river with spectacular views of K6, K7 and Link Sar. We descend further, passing through a small summer settlement on our way to the green irrigated fields of Hushe. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 47. Drive to Skardu passing through many picturesque villages including Khaplu village perched on vertical cliffs. This quaint village of timber and stone houses and precision-made dry walls climbs up a wide alluvial fan under an arc of sheer granite walls. Careful irrigation has made it a shady, fertile oasis. As you climb its winding path, the icy peaks of the Masherbrum Range rise up across the valley. It’s hard to imagine a more majestic setting near a public road anywhere in Pakistan. The main attractions are the 2,600-metre-high village itself, the old royal square and the even older mosque above at Chakchun, and the breathtaking views. Dinner and overnight at the Shangri-La Resort.
Day 48. 8-9 hours drive back from Skardu to Chilas on the Karakoram Highway. Overnight at hotel.
Day 49. 11-12 hours drive from Chilas to Islamabad. Overnight at hotel.
Day 50. Morning briefing with the Ministry of Tourism in Islamabad and afternoon free for shopping. Meals and overnight at hotel.
Day 51. Flight home.
