Why Chimborazo Is the Furthest Point from the Centre of the Earth

Chimborazo is often called “the mountain closest to the Sun”. There is a genuine geodetic record behind that pleasing phrase, but it needs to be stated more precisely: the summit of Chimborazo is further from the centre of the Earth than any other point on the planet’s surface. That is a consequence of the shape of the Earth and of the volcano’s position almost exactly on the equator.

The height of Chimborazo above sea level is 6263 m according to the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador. Everest is far higher in the standard mountaineering system, but it lies much further from the equator. The two records therefore do not contradict each other.

The Earth is not a perfect sphere

Because the planet rotates, it is slightly flattened at the poles and bulges around the equator. A point on the equator is already further from the centre of the Earth than a point at the same elevation in high latitudes. A tall Ecuadorian volcano gains the extra advantage of that equatorial radius.

That is precisely why a comparison “from the centre of the Earth” differs from the familiar height “above sea level”. Mountaineering uses the second system: it gives a vertical figure relative to an agreed level surface. The geodetic record compares distances to the centre of the planet.

Chimborazo or Everest: which mountain is higher

If the question concerns height above sea level, the answer is Everest. If it concerns the distance of the summit from the centre of the Earth, the answer is Chimborazo. You cannot say that Chimborazo is “actually higher than Everest” without specifying the frame of reference.

For a climber this does not make Chimborazo the equivalent of an eight-thousander. Atmospheric pressure and physiological load are determined above all by height above sea level. 6263 m is very high indeed, but it is a different band from Everest’s 8848.86 m.

Is the summit really closest to the Sun

In the popular travel sense, the phrase is used because of that maximum distance from the centre of the Earth. But the literal distance to the Sun changes over the course of a day and a year, and the differences in the Earth’s relief are negligible compared with the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

The correct formulation for an article or a programme is therefore: Chimborazo is the point on the Earth’s surface furthest from the centre of the Earth. “Closest to the Sun” is acceptable as a figure of speech, not as a universal astronomical measurement.

Why the old figure of 6310 m is no longer used

Older Russian-language texts frequently give the figure 6310 m. The current official page of the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador states 6263 m. Mountain Guide uses that figure in its programme and its material.

Various older measurements and maps may give other numbers, but an SEO text must not mix them without explanation. For a commercial programme, what matters is a single official figure consistent with the current route page.

The volcanic status of Chimborazo

Chimborazo is sometimes described as extinct. The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador uses a more cautious classification: potentially active. The official source dates the last known activity to the period between the fifth and seventh centuries and continues to monitor the volcano.

For a traveller this does not mean a daily threat of eruption, but it does show why published material must not replace the official status with the everyday word “extinct”. Access and current recommendations are always checked before a trip.

What the geography means for acclimatisation

An equatorial position does not reduce physiological altitude. On the summit a climber is working in a shortage of oxygen, in cold and in wind. Gradual acclimatisation, monitoring of how everyone feels and a reserve of time are all required.

In the Mountain Guide programme, Chimborazo is preceded by ascents of Pichincha and Rumiñahui and then an attempt on Cotopaxi. That sequence matters more than any geographical record: it is what prepares the body for a night ascent to 6263 m.

Why the climb starts at night

A night start allows more time for a long ascent and descent and lets the team work in better snow and ice conditions. The exact time depends on the route, the weather, the state of the glacier and the guide’s decision.

Older articles often turned an early start into a rigid universal rule with a fixed turnaround time. In practice the team sets its control points for the particular day. A safe descent matters more than a geodetic record or a summit photograph.

What skills you need

Chimborazo is a glaciated mountain. A climber must move confidently in crampons, use an ice axe, keep the right distance on the rope and handle personal equipment in the dark and in gloves. Good fitness without those skills is not enough.

Chimborazo within the Ecuador volcanoes programme

It makes sense to place Chimborazo at the end of the high-altitude section. Pichincha and Rumiñahui provide the first steps, Cotopaxi adds glacier experience when the route is open, and the country’s highest point completes the sequence.

If one of the earlier objectives is closed, the schedule is not simply kept as it stands. The guide assesses the altitudes reached, the nights spent high, the group’s condition and its skills. Any substitution requires a fresh operational agreement.

“Closest to the Sun” is a popular shorthand. The strict statement is that the summit of Chimborazo is further from the centre of the Earth than the summit of Everest, because of the planet’s equatorial bulge.

  • The equator does not remove the cold, the wind or the lack of oxygen
  • A geodetic record does not make the route technically easier
  • Proximity to the centre of the country is no substitute for acclimatisation

In a commercial text the record should attract attention without displacing the description of the glacier objective, the night ascent, the guide’s decisions and the insurance cover.

When mountains are compared, the frame of reference is always stated. Height above sea level answers one question, distance from the centre of the Earth another, while the physical difficulty of a climb is determined by the route, the weather, the acclimatisation and the climber’s condition.
