Safari in Kaziranga: rhinos, rules and preparation

Kaziranga is known for its population of Indian one-horned rhinoceros and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. For the traveller that is not a guarantee of a close encounter, but a chance to see a protected ecosystem while observing the park’s rules.

What the park is like

The landscape of Kaziranga takes in floodplain grassland, water bodies and patches of forest. The animals move freely, so the safari route, the entry time and the zone open to you are set by the park administration and by conditions on the day.

Why sightings cannot be guaranteed

A rhino may be far from the track or hidden by vegetation. Weather, water levels, the state of the tracks and park restrictions all affect access. A responsible operator promises a confirmed safari that goes ahead, not a particular distance from an animal.

How to behave on safari

  • Do not stand up or leave the vehicle without permission
  • Do not feed animals or attract them with noise
  • Do not use flash or play loud music
  • Follow the instructions of the ranger and the driver
  • Do not demand a dangerous approach for a photograph

Optics and clothing

Binoculars are often more useful than a long telephoto lens. Have your camera ready before the encounter so that you are not changing lenses in the dust and holding up the group. Choose neutral-coloured clothing, sun protection and a light warm layer according to the confirmed season and departure time.

Safari as part of a larger route

Kaziranga can be combined with the cultural side of Assam and neighbouring states, but the long drives need planning in their own right. The phrase “rhino safari” says nothing about the length of the whole trip, the number of game drives or the type of vehicle.

These conditions have to be confirmed before booking on the page for the Mountain Guide tour of Northeast India. Until the choice between the short and the long version has been made, the old programme cannot be treated as final.

The ethics of wildlife watching

The value of a safari lies in seeing an animal in its natural environment, not in a staged encounter. Keeping your distance protects the visitor and the rhino alike, and the park’s restrictions take precedence over any commercial timetable.

When the park is open

The season for each zone and the visiting regime are set by the park administration. Flooding, the state of the tracks or conservation measures can change the schedule and close a particular area. Before you travel, confirm the date, the type of safari, the number of drives and the rules on cameras.

If a zone is closed, an operator must not promise unofficial entry. Any substitute is discussed with the group and does not quietly replace Kaziranga with another name.

Accommodation near the park is chosen to match the confirmed entry zone and safari time. An early start means getting clothing, documents and camera ready the evening before, so the group does not lose the slot the administration has allocated.

The one-horned rhinoceros

Kaziranga’s flagship species is the greater Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Watching is done from a distance. The animal may change direction, so the driver does not block its path or pursue it off the permitted route.

Other wildlife

The park’s value lies in the whole ecosystem: birds, hoofed animals, elephants and predators. A species list is not a promise of a sighting. A good guide helps you notice tracks and behaviour, not just collect photographs of big animals.

Morning and afternoon

Different time slots give different light and different levels of animal activity. The exact time is set by your permit and by the zone’s operating hours. Be at the vehicle early and do not delay entry by hunting for a piece of kit.

Health and comfort

Dust, sun and a bumpy ride can be hard on anyone with a respiratory or back condition. Tell us about any limitations before booking. Keep a dust mask, water and medication on you.

Camera equipment

Mount a long lens securely and keep it inside the outline of the vehicle on narrow sections. Prepare a spare battery and memory card in advance. A drone or professional filming may require permits.

Combining with culture

After a safari, a visit to a village or a tea plantation is a separate activity with rules of its own. It should not turn into a staged continuation of the wildlife watching. What each day contains is confirmed in the final version of the tour.
