Northeast India: how to travel respectfully

Northeast India is not a single “tribal region” but a collection of states, languages, religions and local communities. Responsible travel is built around specific routes and specific hosts, not around a promise to show you “undiscovered tribes” as if they were museum exhibits.

Why the route needs time

Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are separated by long roads and administrative boundaries. How long a tour lasts depends on the states you choose, the permits and the transport. That is why the Northeast India programme requires a separate confirmation of which version applies before booking, and this article promises no single schedule.

Assam

Assam provides the natural and cultural backbone of the route: the Brahmaputra valley, national parks, tea-growing districts and communities for whom farming and craft remain part of the modern economy. A village visit is only possible when the hosts agree to it.

Nagaland

Nagaland is known for the variety of its peoples and festivals, but no event in the calendar can be guaranteed without the dates lining up and the organisers confirming. A cultural centre or heritage village gives you an introduction, yet it is no substitute for respectful contact in a living settlement.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya draws people for its wet forests, limestone landscape and living root bridges. Access to any particular site depends on the state of the trail and on local rules. Do not step off the route, damage the roots or put strain on the structure for the sake of a photograph.

Rules for a respectful visit

  • Ask permission before photographing people or houses
  • Avoid demeaning words such as “wild” or “primitive”
  • Do not interrupt ceremonies or everyday work
  • Buy craftwork at an agreed price, without pressure
  • Follow the instructions of the local guide and your hosts

How to read a programme

Before paying, you should have the confirmed duration, the list of states, the permits, the types of accommodation, the transport and the list of meals included. General text about the Northeast is no substitute for a day-by-day itinerary.

The current trip page is the Northeast India tour. The main content of that page will be reworked only once a confirmed version of the route has been chosen.

Safety and permits

Some districts require special permits, and access can depend on your nationality and on the rules in force. Mountain Guide confirms the formalities that apply to your chosen version of the route, but you check your Indian visa and any transit requirements yourself.

A change in the situation, in the roads or in a decision by the local administration may mean a stage has to be replaced. Any such adjustment should be explained by safety and legality, not dressed up with an invented “equivalent” encounter.

A good programme names not only peoples and states but also the host organisation, the format of the meeting and what photography is allowed. Where those confirmations are missing, the cultural promise should be removed rather than replaced with vague talk of “the exotic”.

How a confirmed route is built

First you choose the states and the main objective: nature, cultural encounters or a combination. Then the roads, permits, park opening and accommodation are checked. Only then is the duration fixed. Trying to keep both a short timeframe and the full list of states leads to unacceptable amounts of driving.

The consent of your hosts

A village visit is arranged through a local partner. People may decline to be photographed, to talk, or to have you in their home. Paying for a tour does not buy access to a person. The guide translates the rules and stops any traveller who crosses the line.

Language and interpreting

The region has a great many languages. A local guide may use English and a regional language. The language of guiding is confirmed with the package and should not be assumed from the name of the company.

Roads and transport

Driving times depend on the road surface, the weather and checks at state boundaries. Kilometres on a map do not reflect how long a journey really takes. Be ready for early starts and for stops to change.

Accommodation

A hotel, a lodge, a guesthouse and a camp offer very different conditions. Shower, hot water, electricity, internet and laundry are confirmed night by night. A blanket phrase such as “comfortable accommodation”, with no names or category, is not enough.

Documents

Your passport, visa, insurance and any additional permits must all spell your name the same way. Keep electronic copies separately. If the route changes, the applicable permits are checked again.
